Crazy Burger $7.90
Khim was the first to tell me about this new Ang Moh Hawker in Bishan when they first opened months ago. A few days after she raved about the food, she went back again and reported that her second visit wasn't as rosy. So I kept it on the shelf for a while. Then the reviews started coming in the forums comparing them with the other Ang Moh Hawker, Botak Jones -- and Crazy Ang Moh came up short. So I thought that that was the end of the line and that this Ang Moh in the Heartlands was not going to appear in the blog.
But then I heard a bit more about this "Crazy" Ang Moh going around with a loud hailer, organizing ice cream eating competitions for the kids and even praying for one particular old man with a frozen shoulder. (The old man apparently came back the next day exuberant that his shoulder was healed!) On top of that, I heard they actually served true blue Aussie tucker (food). So I thought it was interesting enough to go see just how crazy this particular Ang Moh really is.
When I was a medical student in Sydney, my favourite Aussie food were meat pies, fish and chips and Burgers. What makes an Aussie Burger different is that they add a slice of Beetroot to the burger to give it that tangy sweet taste. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it actually does grow on you. So I was really happy to find that Crazy Ang Moh served up an Aussie Burger with the Beetroot as well as a slice of pineapple, sunny side up egg and cheese for $7.90.
The pineapple and beetroot gave the burger a sweetish tingle which I really enjoy. (Same reason why I like Sweet and Sour Pork), though I felt that the meat was ground too fine and was a little over spiced with Oregano. I reckon with a bit of tweaking with the pattie and this burger could be one of the really good and cheap burgers in town. (But you'll have to learn to appreciate beetroot) 4/5
Fish and Chips $6.50
Now, the Burger was close to a Fair Dinkum (true blue) Aussie Burger but I can't say the same for the fish and chips. I have never seen bits of herb in the batter anywhere in Australia. They use cream dory here which sometimes can taste a little muddy. There are lots of very competent hawker fish and chips around and this one just fails to stand out amongst all of them. I guess by using a fish that is more traditionally Aussie like Hake would drive the price up, but at least it would differentiate them from the rest of the local hawker western food. I for one would love to eat a fish and chips that does not have any kind of Dory in it! 3.5/5
Banana Pudding 4/5
The man behind the fryer is Tennis Coach and Wollongong boy, Paul Crinis who came to Singapore on a whim to teach Tennis. He then met one of our lovely Singaporean girls and decided to stay a little longer. When she brought him home to meet Mom, he was so loud that by the end of the visit, she started calling him the Crazy Ang Moh. Now she has a Crazy Ang Moh as a son-in-law and even a half Ang Moh granddaughter.
Conclusion
I must admit that I was not really expecting the food to be first class after reading the reviews. But I think that Crazy Ang Moh does have some saving grace, one being that it is the only joint that serves up an Aussie Burger and I also heard that he does a Roast Leg of Lamb for Weekend lunches for $15.90. (I think that is worth checking out) Plus, I think it is heartening to see an Aussie Bloke in the Singapore heartlands really trying to spread some Aussie culture amongts us more conservative Singaporeans.

di u manage to try e chix wings?? how different is it from other chix wings?
Sounds interesting, will have to try this when we visit Singers.

I was at the Sydney Fish Market yesterday, and I had this battered fish that had bits of herb in it!!
Ah! The Sydney Fish Market, one of my favourite weekend haunts. Well, this herb battered fish concept might be something we will see more of in the future, though for me the classic fish and chips should not have herbs in it.
only the burger is good. The rest of the food is so so...
tried e chix wings today.. batter-wise still ok.. however, e chix wings were uncooked.. =(
e auntie still claimed she cooked for 10mins..
took a couple of photos for evidence!!
I went to Crazy Ang Mo last saturday, totally turned off! the chinese cashier and kitchen helper were rude, and the food turned out horrible! we ordered the fish and chips and pork schnitzel. fish and chip was so wet inside, i donno why. the pork's gravy taste like plain water (that diluted!) with brown coloring. Im not kidding. I was waiting to see if the ang mor chef will be there so that I can ask him to taste it himself and tell me if that is what he call australian food. My god, the food really tasted awful, i regretted not trying their burger though. After the meal, I felt like vomitting fish. arghhhh
Crazy Ang Moh is much overrated. Long wait for mediocre food.
Had the fish n chips and burger two weeks back. Found the burger good but not great.
The fish n chips was a totally different story. This fish was not fresh and the batter was brown - meaning the oil had not been changed for awhile.
There's another overrated stall called Charco's The Flaming Chicken @ Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 where Botak Jones was previously located and it's also ran by a Caucasian guy.
Had the quarter chicken and 3 sides $6.50 i think and the lamb ribs @ $10.90.
Again, mediocre food which is hyped up by the press.
Still prefer the good ol' western food at Rasa Sayang AMK S-11.
No need elaborate, pseudo fine dining dishes - just give me my chicken chop and fish n chips anytime.
I think you use the word overrated too loosely. How can you say the food is overrated after reading this blog? The review was a very guarded review!
Another 'great' recommendation by Khim! Haha bring it on! ;-)
How bout replacing "Overrated" with "Overhyped" :)
OK, overhyped may be a better word. I think very soon, Ang Moh in the heartlands will become parse. Then we have to look for Ang Moh cooking Cze Char! Now that will be news especially if he can get the wok hei better than the locals
cultured tastebuds:
well, one of e reason y i recommended Crazy Ang Mo to Les is becos of e unique & interesting way Paul do his business!
who goes around his store wif a mic calling out numbers to get their food & giving crazy deals?
i didn't say all his food is 100% fantastic, did i? i did tell Les abt my second visit which was not so rosy (if u read Les' blog wif ur eyes open!)
all i did was recommend to Les, it's really up to Les to decide whether to put tis place up or not after trying e food wif makan-kakis..
one man's meat is another's poison. i'm sure most of us have heard of tis phrase before..
however, i do agree e standard had dropped. i’m not sure if it’s becos Paul is not around, thus his cooks is not cooking according to e proper standards..
why dun YOU give us some GREAT recommendations instead since my recommendations aren't good enough for YOU?
cheers
hmmm looks like Congreve's line - "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" still rings true today! chill out guys!
I'm an Aussie visiting Singapore in search of some real Aussie food. Heard of Crazy Ang Mo's through a mate and wanted to test whether it lived up to the hype. Tried the Crazy Burger and Banana pudding. Was impressed to see the Caucasion owner had ensured all the true ingrediants were added including Beetroot! Burger overall was sensational and really hit the mark, desert was a winner as well. Service was good but very busy, as the place is obviously popular with the locals. I went around 7.30 pm on a weds but would recommend you get there a little earlier to avoid a short wait. Overall good to see someone flying the Aussie cuisine in Sing!
All I can say since I've been in Singers, It's about time some quality food is around. Nothing like a great juicy hamburger with the lot. If you're from oz, you'd know what I'm talking about. Great to know after having sooo much rice it could come out of my ears I have an alternative. It's about bloody time!!!!
khim - chill..
anon - there are so many places serving angmoh food, non rice cuisine. what you complaining about?
Went to crazy angmo today. Not bad, i love the chicken parmagian! Very different take on western food!
Will be going back for a 2nd round. Confirm chop guarantee!
Hi guys, Crazy Ang Mo have been replaced with Capolavoro at the same address. Seems like it was featured on some tv show for good food, like those pasta. Unfortunately, the food quality I had was pissed poor. I went there yesterday and ordered a Pork Chop and a Chicken Cutlet. The chicken cutlet came with fries and a piece of lettuce leaf only. The fries were too salty and not warm. The piece of leaf looked pretty pathetic. The chicken cutlet meat was not of a good quality and the overall taste is not even as good as those western stalls that get the food from a supplier (like Ke Ai Ji). The pork chop was way overcook and very hard . Scrapping aside the sauce and one can see part of the meat looked burned. The sause for the pork chop talso asted not very nice. The french loaf that came with the meal was not even toaste, and I'm also not fond of the topping they used. Overall I rate Capolavoro 1.5/5 for those 2 food. IhHighly recommend readers to avoid the stall.
Thanks for letting us know. I have updated the blog post
where did crazy ang moh moved to? anybody knows?
