Noor Jannah's Kitchen: Bone Steak Hor Fun Anyone?
With fashionfoodie, bashful hunter, carnineviand, khim and friends
The good people from Noor Jannah's who were responsible for the Prata Bomb, have just moved to their new location at Jalan Masjid. As you would recall in the previous post, the neighbours were complaining about the smoke from the BBQ pit and as a result they couldn't grill their satay outside anymore. So they actually moved to another location and starting doing this Bone Steak Hor Fun which became a big hit after it was featured in the Suria Channel. When the owners of the coffeeshop saw how successful they were, they decided to take back the coffeeshop and run it themselves. As a result, this nice Malay couple found themselves having to move again. So now they have settled in Jalan Masjid, a place where they can panggang their Satay in the open and lead a Kampung like existence, hopefully for a long time.
I really enjoy eating at Noor Jannah's because they are not afraid of experimenting with new things. The raisin bomb, cheese bomb came into existence because of our zany experimentations and the bone steak hor fun became a reality because of the Satay Man's (Sha) secret fantasies.
This is my very first review of a Malay Cze Char. In fact, it is the first time I am eating Malay Cze Char. With all due respect to our Muslim readers, I have never really thought of eating Halal Cze Char because I had always assumed that there was no way Halal Cze Char can be that good since they don't use any pork to cook. However, I was proved wrong as the Hor Fun turned out to be quite tasty and I dare say better than a lot of Chinese Cze Char Hor Fun. Our group felt that the Hor Fun deserved a 4/5 even though it still lacked that elusive wok hei flavour. We were however not quite sure about the combination of Bone Steak and Hor Fun. The taste was just too jarring for our liking. However, it might appeal to people who love the strong taste of mutton. Guess it's something you will have to try for yourself!
If you like Malay Style Mee Goreng, then we would recommend you this particular one. Before this, I only know of Indian and Chinese Mee Goreng. Fashionfoodie told me that this version is the Malay version, which was more like the Chinese version but is more savoury than sweet. He gave the Mee Goreng a 4.25/5.
We confirm that you can now find the raisin and cheese bomb here and the good olde prata man from Malaysia is also resident. So this is going to be my regular prata spot since it is close to home. They have also introduce coin pratas which are mini pratas the size of a drink coaster. At six pieces for $2, it's great for the kids but a heck of a lot of work for $2 if you ask me. 4.25/5
Finally, my favourite (Malay) satay has found a home in the East. Not just I say, but the rest of my makankakis who are tasting the satays for the very first time also agree that the satays here are really good. Sha uses only thigh meat and they are big enough to remain juicy after grilling. We all agreed that it deserved a 4.5/5 You can also get beef tripe satay here, though it was a little too soft that evening and only scored a 3/5. However, Sha has informed me that he has already rectified the problem, so it should be much better now.
Like most Muslim 24 hour joints, the coffeeshop also serves a lot of other stuff. Frizz grill is also here for those looking for western food in the middle of the night. They also have a stalls selling Naan Bread and Ayam Penyat. Located in close proximity to two other 24 hour Muslim eateries, this stretch along Upper Changi Road is fast becoming a hub for those looking to satisfy their hunger 24/7.
Conclusion
To my surprise, Malay Cze Char actually turned out to be quite good. You'll just have to try the bone steak Hor Fun out for yourself to determine if you like it. The place has got a laid back kampong charm to it and coupled with a very good Prata and Satay, I can see myself having supper here quite often.

Wah, pity I missed this one! Had attended an ALPHA course that night =)
Glad that the owners finally settled down at a place close to home too!
Will check it out soon! Especially for the prata bombs and the satay
ahhh... the one that i missed... what a wste.. sounded like the food was good and the co even better..
yeah, i like good satay, will check it out.
Also missed leh. Must check it out soon.
Was there for lunch. Recognised the guy, he is from Bedok Blk 18 at the coffee shop where Black Board is.In fact he is there for many years before Black Board.I always ate at his stall during Hari Raya Puasa. His Nazi Padang is very good 4.5/5. Normal days his display is not attractive.
Had the mee goreng wet but good 4/5 but my wife prefer the drier type. No prata so had the longtong. Unfortunately longtong is cold (out from the fridge).
LOST N FOUND: at the same coffee I discovered my favourite DAAN stall. I missed them for more than 7 years. He was last at Block 18 too. This guy a Malay is from Hotel Oberoi.Guess I have to visit them another day.
Sha did mention tat e uncle from e tandoori n naan store is a LOST & FOUND!!
Khim, very very sorry, I was sleeping at that time!
i just came back from Noor Jannah's kitchen.
it was a disappointment.
mee goreng - too salty. well fried, but i thought too heavy handed with the salt.
horfun - not bad, but lacking the wok hei, as the review as said.
satay was a huge disappointment. it came unevenly cooked - chicken was burnt, and the mutton satay was undercooked. they claimed the fire had gone out. when we asked them to recook the satay, it came back carbon coated - burnt!
all in all, not a good outing.
no worries, uncle smart! see u at e next makan session on tue! ;)
sorry for the non-topic post but I'm planning a trip to singapore and I've enjoyed reading your blog. I read an excerpt from a book about dinners all over the world:
http://www.oneforthetable.com/oftt/stories/surprise-dinner-in-singapore.html
it is about a place, Sin Huat Eating House. Does anyone here know it? recommend it? It sounds really good.
hi jeremy,

Good feedback sumo, I will let them know.
Tks Sumosumo for the feed back. Khim: hope you do the same. give feedback on the FOOD
yes, e bone steak hor fun was pretty good, except for e "wok hei" problem. i'm sure once tackled, a lot of people will be asking for it! ;)
e ayam penyat was nice too.. fashionfoodie & wife commented tat e chilli tat accompanied e chicken was good. just tat e chicken was a little dry, could be becos it was breast meat..
mee goreng was tasty but for me, i prefer not to take hot stuff, so found e chilli quite hot for me.. =p
among e satay, i like e chicken e best - it's juicy, well marinated n tender. followed by e mutton satay - it's marinated nicely wif no strong mutton aftertaste, although i found e marinate a bit on e sweet side.. e beef tripe was quite a disappointment tat day, as it was really soft n not chewy at all.. glad tat Sha had rectified e problem. will give it a try again.
oh ya.. forgot to mention abt e raisin & cheese bomb!
it's quite good! but on tat day, e cook seemed to put a little more ghee/margarine/oil, so it's a bit too oily (but i still finished it!) =p
it's very small & easy to eat! =)
I went there the moment I saw this blog as i was so near by. I can't take mutton so i had the regular beef hor fun in the leaf, the coin pratas, the cheese prata, mee goreng and prata bomb.
The beef was tender for coffeestall standards and overall the hor fun is good (though i don't know if the leaf made any difference). The pratas were not too oily and easy to consume as we don't have to tear up the prata too much. The mee goreng was a disappointment. Rather dry. I thought the prata bomb lacked its 'bomb' factor, unlike the one at Thomson, but of course this one's healthier i reckon - less sugar and no condensed milk. Prata man couldn't understand what we want and i felt service was abit messy.
The best thing about Jannah's i felt, was the curry for the prata. I usually have my prata with sugar only, but i couldn't resist the curry!
All in all i'd go back!
sherie,
next time when u go back, u should try e chicken satay! =)

Hi all. A friend from abroad will be visiting me soon and her fav food is satay. I've read Leslie's entries on satay and Noor Janna's Kitchen sounds interesting. Can someone kindly give directions to the eatery via public transport (MRT/bus)? Thanks.
To get there, you need to take the train to Kembangan mrt station and proceed to Jalan Masjid.
Satayman, Do u sell satay during lunch? When I was there around 12pm satay was not available
Sorry but satay only starts from 6pm onwards. Do drop by again next time.
what has not been answered by good 'ol dr leslie is whether tis satay guy is legal??? from what has been told by others, he operates from home with no license from NEA, who is going to be held responsible should aniting happen like food poisoning? NEA? Dr leslie? Sha? only legalised businesses should be promoted in tis food blog inlight of the recent food poisoning cases...
who is e "others" u r talking abt, anonymous?
y dun u call sha & let him invite u to his factory for inspection?
i'm sure sha will be more than happy to show u his factory
Sha has been asking me to go to his factory to blog the satay making process but I don't have the time to do it yet. His factory is in Aljunied Ave 3 and his license number is AVAC070201173. So if anyone really wants to go do an inspection please let me know and I will arrange for you.
ah....no reply from anonymous...must be just some trouble maker...
Will be glad to check out the satay making process too.
What I don't understand is that why do people always blame the blogger for things that are beyond their control.
For example, if a reader reads a blog article by a flogger and he/she ends up with a tummy upset or even worse, food poisoning, then should the flogger be blamed for sharing his eating escapes?
So should I blame the press or journalists when I kena food poisoning because I ate at some place they recommend?
A joke hor...
why do u guys even entertain these anonymous trouble makers.
all cowards hiding behind their anonymity making slanderous remarks.
This Anonymous is a coward n a BIG trouble maker. This is not the first time he posted bad remarks on Shah. Must be competitor n his satay not selling well.
Anonymous whoever you are, its very obvious you have an agenda to push.
Quote"from what has been told by others,"
Firstly, you did not leave a name/nick/callsign, there is no way we could future reference you even if satayman/ieat makes a reply. As long as anyone operates from a coffeeshop, the owner would have to make sure the operator has the necessary licences. S'pore is a well regulated country, not the wild west, Anonymous if you think satayman is operating illegally, go directly to NEA with your name and make a formal compliant, we are not the revelant authorities, just a humble food blog for foodies to talk about FOOD and their experences.
"From what has been told by others" is a very lame statement for a excuse to slander other people. Be a MAN/WOMAN and e-mail Dr Leslie Tay directly if he is biased/untruthful about his reviews. Readers would know that some regular foodies contributors dun always agree with ieat reviews. Read the comments section after the review been made to get a more balanced view of the topic. Remember taste is subjective and not all food appeals to everyone.
TAG
well said TAG!
wah tis person kena hantam by so many of u...but its for all of us n the blog to ensure legal n NEA aproved hawkers sell their products. Is tis sha's own factory n license or is he using sumone else's....... dr leslie shld once n 4 all find out the truth coz i was told tat this sha has no business relation wif the holder of the license n factory n is jus 'borrowing' it 2 look legal 4 dr leslie..... if its true, den its a slap on the face of tis highly rated blog.
obviously sibeisian have not read tag's comments..
n i think sibeisian deserve a slap on e face..
this is a blog
sibesian, Dr. Les blog is on food at the stall. Must he has to find out where the stall made his food.Today many stalls outsource their food/ingredients. If that fellow (no name) knows the truth then that no name should report to the relevent govt authorities or even the press/media. He can even email directly to Dr. Les the facts. His posts on this subject appeared whenever Dr. Les's blog on the satay.
wonder why sibeisian doesn't want go to the NEA himself and make an inquiry....if you can give me your number, we can go down to NEA together? guess his needs some excitement in his pathetic life :)
$8/- for bone hor fun seem pricy. There is only two little bone marrow to suck. Don't know whether there is any health benefit in eating bone marrow!
Hor fun is not bad and tasty though.
senyum,
do u taste any wok hei when u had e hor fun? cos e other time we tried, e hor fun lack wok hei..
Did they stop selling the prata? Went there yesterday and they said there was no prata.
went down to try their bone steak horfun. i must say i was surprise with the taste of it. i personally like it alot.. except for the price ($8) when they mention it could feed 2 person.. which in fact can only feed 1.. and +.. i dunno how to appreciate bone steak.
are we supposed to suck out the "juice" inside the bone? **shrugs**
will definitely go down again to try the beef one instead.
we tried the rojak too. and it was wayyyyyyyyyy too sweettttttttttttt and the you tiao.. was wayyyyyyyyy too soggy. it wasnt a very nice .. overall sensation for the rojak i must say.
as for the Teh-O limau, i feel that there's not much tea flavour, cant really taste the limau.. and a little pricey for the size of it. (maybe i'm just too used to spize @ simpang for the size of their drinks)
verdict: 6.5/10 ( i will revist them for the beef horfun + the prata bomb if they still have it)
