Piao Ji Fish Porridge: Long Queue plus Pay More, still people come!

With Amagada, ieatjr and ieatprincess

Sliced Fish Soup $5-$7

With the increased emphasis on a healthier lifestyle, I am making a conscious effort to eat more vegetables and trying to substitute meat with fish instead. That does not mean that I am giving up on lard and beef burgers. But as with all things, moderation is the key. So even though you see a post on something really really unhealthy, you must remember that constitutes maybe 4 meals out of a possible 21 meals a week. That underscores what I mean when I say that one should "Never waste your calories on yukky food". Enjoy your food when it is really good and store up your calorie quota at other times.

Smart has been chastising me about not including this fish soup in my series on Amoy St Food Centre. He prefers this one over Han Kee. And since Amagada loves fish soup, I found myself at Amoy St Food Centre one Sunday for lunch after Church. I thought that being a weekend, I would not have to contend with the office crowd.

Boy was I wrong. There was a queue of like 20 people and the queue was moving very slowly. What to do? Die die must try, so Kwai Kwai must queue.

Forty minutes later we finally got our fish soup.

Well, the soup was not quite up to our very high expectations, but the fish was very fresh and moist. The fact that each bowl was cooked individually means that the old man made sure that the fish was not overcooked but maintained its juices. Good but not nearly as good as I expected it to be. My vote still goes to Han Kee. 4.25/5

Conclusion

Would not mind eating it if it wasn't for the long queue and the fact that the smallest serving was $5. So which one is better in your books? Han Kee or Piao Ji?

Pao Ji soup got more flavour as they added lard, ginger etc. Han Kee soup is cheng cheng... clear. Both have fresh fish because they will be sold out for the day.Still I prefer Pao Ji and usually order $7 or $10 after all it is not everyday that I go to amoy St. area.

this is one of the best fish soup around, IMHO. very popular with the cbd crowd.

havent tried Han Kee.

For this stall, i would usually also ask them to include the egg roe of the fish. additional $1 buys you more cholestrol.

good stuff.

I prefer Han Kee as Piao Ji's minimum serving is $5 compared to Han Kee's $3.50.

And Han Kee's $4 portion is much larger than Piao Ji's minimum serving.

The soup ain't that healthy either as I find it rather salty and oily.

For lovers of seafood soup, I'd recommend Piao Ji as the prawns are big and fresh, albeit they do come at a premium.

Have tried both Han Kee or Piao Ji.Didn't like Han Kee(tried 2 times) at all to me tasted abit better than boiled water with salt. Piao Ji can do for me soup was more favourable and tasty.

Give me Jing Hua Sliced Fish Soup at Maxwell Hawker Centre any time. Beat these two hands down although the long queue is a menace too

Definitely Piao Ji for me. Fresh ingredients plus the soup is unique 'cos they add fried galagal (if you can taste it)with pork lards bits and fried onions. Han Kee is ordinary as you could had at any fish soup stall

I think it's unfair to compare a clear version with a one with milk.

I'm a Piaoji fan..the piaoji soup got kick cos they add nan-jiang! so shiok!

40 mins Q! that's ridiculous! when I go on Saturdays the queue is shorter at 8-10 person.

Finally had this last week and as a fish soup fan, boy I was disappointed. It was really truly average. From the soup to da fish to everything. The fish IMO was a tad overcooked and actually not the most fresh I have had. I had the $7 portion, seriously overpriced. The only thing that was commendable is that the aunty who took order was really nice and very very polite. My vote for fav fish soup still goes to Heng Heng at Jurong West.
