D'bun: Cheesecake Mooncake

Mini Oreocheesecake $26.80 (8 pieces)

When you were young, were you ever told that that moon was made of cheese? Well, it so happens that this particular Moon-cake is made out of cheese-cake. Yeah yeah its corny, but what do you expect at 2am in the morning?

Anyway, with the Mooncake festival just 2 weeks away, it's time to look at some Mooncakes. Now, unlike our reporter friends from the media, I don't have the luxury of tasting all the fine hotel mooncakes and write about them all in the one article. So I just write about whatever comes my way which is noteworthy. And one of the more noteworthy ones I have come across recently are the ones by our good friends at D'bun.

Nowadays, people are putting all sorts of stuff into Mooncakes and it is not unusual for find truffles and fine belgian chocolates in Mooncakes. Which begs the question, when is a Mooncake a Mooncake? I guess you can call anything a Mooncake if it is covered with thin pastry and has been molded into the "Mooncake" shape.

So yes, you can mold Snowskin over Oreo Cheesecake and it can be considered a Mooncake rather than a Cheesecake. Whatever it is, you should be able to cut it and eat with your fingers rather than with a dessert spoon.

I was actually quite taken with the Cheesecake Mooncake. The cream cheese is just slightly salted so its got that nice savory sweet taste. D'bun's snowskin is nice and soft, but still gummy enough so you can chew on it. 4.25/5

Mini Snow Skin Durian $26.80 (8 pieces)

Now, I have always been a firm believer that Durians should be eaten "Au Natural" and don't really like all the different variations of the fruit. But Mimi tells me that her durian mooncakes are made from 100% D24 Durians without the addition of any flour or cream. It was ok I guess, but I still prefer eating fresh durians. However, for those who don't like the smell of day old Durian lingering on their fingers, this might be a good way to enjoy the fruit. 3.75/5.

Conclusion

So do you think Mooncakes should be traditional or do you go for all these modern variations? And where are you all buying your Mooncakes this year?

My favourite is still white lotus not so sweet with 2 yolks.

The fancy ones can buy one to try for fun...

Actually if you ask me I don't think Mooncakes are die die must try type things. They are more like, seasonal, traditional foods that we eat to mark an occasion. Like Nian Gao and others. Bak Chang on the other hand is really nice and that is why it is available all year round, so is pineapple tarts.

Do I have a favourite type? Not really but I must say that I have developed a liking for the snowskin version.

How do you keep snowskin mooncakes? Leave in the fridge, it hardens. Leave it out, it get moldy easily.

hahah, i don't mind trying new variety, but i think i'll still prefer the traditional white lotus ones.

hmm, you have developed a liking for our snowskin friends eh? so do you like the traditional more or the snowskin? : )

cheers,

I think with Mooncakes I prefer to have a variety instead of eating just one.

Aiya....I was lunching in Joo Chiat a moment ago. Didn't saw this entry else would have gone to take a look! Mooncakes are fattening! Slurp tea along with it. I think some of the traditional mooncakes are too sweet. Durian mooncakes are nice. Cheesecake ones....hmmm....

I actually love mooncakes and wish they are around more often in a year~

I am a huge fan of all types of mooncakes.

I love all the novelty snowskin - cheese, truffles, champagne kinda mooncakes :) Favorites are Raffles the Plaza and Bakerzin for now. Have not tried D'Bun yet though.

Though bak kwa is available all year round I really only eat it during CNY period keke.

I like snowskin mooncakes, my favourite is East Ocean's custard snowskin mooncakes. I send several cartons to Jakarta every year for my Indonesian clients. They love this!

I have yet to try Raffles the Plaza's creations. I should go get one box, just to blog. :)

Free tasting of mooncakes at Mooncake Fair, basement of Ngee Ann City.

One stop convenient shopping for mooncakes as you get to see and taste mooncakes from major companies.

My annual mooncake shopping must visit place because must buy gifts to send during this festive celebration mah.

I spent 2 hours at the fair yesterday and tried lots of yucky, also got some nice ones, mooncakes. Some mooncakes nice to look at, not nice to eat.

Prepared to get dirty looks from the promoters of some 5-star hotels. Geez... want to promote and let people taste, dun be judgemental lah. There are people who go just to try and dun buy, but there are genuine buyers too.

D'bun has a tasty red date filling mooncake which I like. Les didn't try?

Eastcoastlife, any recommendations for not so sweet white lotus paste double yolk moon cakes amongst those you tried?

cactuskit,
East Ocean. 东海 I don't eat too sweet stuff.

Go to this mooncake fair and try the different mooncakes at one stop. You can find some surprises.

ieat, u sure know how to impress ur mother in law to be! LOL

personally, i still prefer the traditional ones from da zhong guo. over the years, there is a growing number of snowskin variety but many of them are too sweet and too 'fashionable'.:))

Well, judging from the fact that she is now my mother in law, I guess the result is 100% successful, although at the time I had to do it the hard way since I was a poor student so I couldn't afford any mooncakes at all, just the occasional Char Kway Teow.
