Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee: Eat it before it goes!

Bad news!

The building that houses the coffeeshop where Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee is housed will be undergoing renovation to convert it to a hotel. So our Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee uncle is forced to vacate and has up till now not been able to find a suitable stall to migrate to. Uncle Alex said he might even be thinking of calling it a day since his right shoulder is giving him so much problems.

That means that the stall which I consider to be one of the top 3 Hokkien Mees in Singapore may soon become just nostalgia! So if you are a fan of HKM, you have only up till 24 August (last day) to eat here before they close for an indefinite period of time.

BTW, if you know of any suitable coffeeshop in the East, please do write in and let me know. His criteria is that it should have space for carparking, be located somewhere around the East and preferably not be under HDB.

Postscript:

Alex and his family would like to thank all their customers for their support all these years. He will be taking a short break and when they settle in their new stall, they will announce it on this blog. So watch this space.

Update 16 Aug 2008

Just had the HKM today. Very shiok. I am upping is rating to 4.6/5 If only he brought back the boiled pork belly....

Updated 18 Sep 2008

They are now at 1 Joo Chiat Place! Read the latest update here.

What about Jiu Shan Eating House? I thot I saw a vacant stall. Need to confirm.

Quite sad too as I like the HKM here a lot. :(

Must go there with wife these next few days.

Holy Drummer said...

Likewise!

Why not Jago Close?

cactuskit said...

Better still, but don't think there's any vacant space there. The other possible spot is the 126 Beer Garden at the Joo Chiat Rd/ East Coast Rd junction.

ieat said...

There is one place near Jiu Shan, but it is too close to the other charcoal fried HKM which is operated by his sister in law.

The problem with 126 according to him is the lack of car park.

EastCoastLife said...

Sayang leh, his Hokkien Mee very yummy! Carpark problem very bad lah.

Die lah! Budget hotel, right? Probably going to have lots of 'chickens' running around. I must make my hubby wear a tracking device, later go for stroll, stroll until go hotel! My house so near that place, already so many foreign pros at the pub.

cactuskit said...

No no no. 126 Beer Garden is the coffeeshop located at the junction of East Coast Rd and Joo Chiat Rd (where the taukwa pau is). Hahahhahaa. No budget hotel there.

ieat said...

Yeah, you are right EastCoastlife! The chickens might come out of Joo Chiat and invade Katong now! What do you think should be done? Will you take the lead to make this a political issue?

smart said...

My friend is heading the Joo Chiat residents and seeing result getting rid of the chicken

JY said...

Is his stall opened on Sundays?

Do you have the contact number?

Thanks!

Hi there, I'm not really sure but I think there's an empty stall next to Rajah's curry at the Soy Eu Tua Coffeeshop at Jalan Tua Kong. The stall that used to occupied by the Char Kway Teow man. Parking is plenty opposite...

The coffeeshop next to Mas Ayu housing the famous 132 Mee Pok might also have a stall I think... not sure also...

ieat said...

Yes. They close on Mondays. I think the contact is in the previous post which is linked.

cactuskit said...

What about Carlton just down from where AL/AT are? Down there should have ample parking.

bb-tony said...

aiyah eastcoastlife/ ieat, please lah, joo chiat is katong and katong is joo chiat. marine parade people say they live in katong... marine parade land did not exist b4 1950. katong existed b4 1880, joo chiat exisited before 1920. that joo chiat road only 1.3km but seem to be in 4 districts! a rose by any other name... the chickens in katong and joo chiat still exist and free ranging... they also live in marine parade hdb and walkup apartments along east coast road... so don't knock the problem and lump it as a joo chiat problem or try to separate the identity of katong and joo chiat, they are one and the same lah.

budget h0t3l 81 also behind NUS Halls too. guess big demand there for some reason huh.

i digress, talking about available food stall. how about pohho (bao3 he2) kopitiam corner of onan road and crane road? the breakfast beehoon, teochew homecook economical rice is very good there. unfortunately, they not open in the evening normally.
the 24 hr fei fei wonton noodle kopitiam seem to underutilised... one stall there seem to be always closed... good traffic there
how abt dunman food centre? the two fried noodles there are crap. looks like 2 or 3 stalls available here.

anyone knows where George Joo Chiat Fried Kway Teow went too... the last place, corner of JC Road & JC Place, whole kopitiam closed overnight.

I think that if Joo Chiat cleans up the pros.... all the business there will suffer....

right now, there are so many shops, restaurants and eateries along Joo Chiat. And it is the chickens and the chicken catchers keeping the place bustling and making the restaurants thrive.

the moment that is cleared out, the businesses there will suffer. just like Bugis.. when they cleaned up the area, its not the same anymore..

I only eat lunch there. Dinner quite scary.

Ate at Lor 29 HKM today for lunch. Spoke to him. Sounds like uncle will be back. Its just to consider the various options. To stay (depends on new rental after renovations), or to relocate (a few in the pipeline, all East Coast area).

ieat said...

Hi bb-tony,

You should really join the forum and come for the makan session one day. The latest news coming out of Joo Chiat that we are discussing in the forum is the emergence of Old Swee Kee chicken rice which just opened last week.

bb-tony said...

not wrong guys, however, the sleaze has well and truly moved to the kopitiams much like parts of geylang. however, majority of these new kopitiams are simply cashing in on the beer sales to make money (they don't even bother to open for lunch)... if you focus in on the ones that make good food, they do not need the chickens or johns to survive...

exception to the rule. in the heart of the sleaze in joo chiat, in the blue zone, there is Madam Low restaurant. this is a very very good sze char place even tho they do pander to the sleaze crowd at night. i would even go to say that they have the best Fried Rice this side of Singapore. Go try if you don't believe. Especially when the white haired uncle is in the kitchen, it never disappoints. They have a couple of neat dishes i don't see anywhere too like this fried nian gao... which is fried up like a char kway teow. now, Madam Low has been here since the early 90s and even the staff says that they don't need the sleaze crowd in order to stay in biz. ironic statement considering that when they are shut on alternative sundays, the sleaze crowd and girls in the blue zone volume drops like 80%! lol.

So, question is does sleaze attract good food or good food attract the crowds (including the sleaze)?

ieat, which forum are you referring to? i just read mainly your blog but not seen a forum..

bb-tony said...

thanks guys.
opps, got it. signed on, will skip this sunday session tho, doing my belated bdae do sat night and will be most likely nursing a hangover on sunday. will keep checking on other makan dos.

cactuskit said...

Welcome bb-tony! : )

Is it easy to locate Mdm Low? Name of coffeeshop? Do they serve lunch? Its now on my must-try list.

ieat said...

Just had lunch there today. Was discussing with Uncle Alex on the possibility of setting up a traditional HKM stall where the sotong, pork and other seafood are displayed at the side so that people can choose their ingredients. He seemed quite excited about it.

Anyway his HKM is still very kilat. I am upping his score to 4.6/5!

Sumosumo said...

i think abit of sleaze gives our country character.

otherwise, singapore is just like the Truman show.. everything is regulated and structured in a way to showcase the best of Singapore to the worldwide audience, so that they will put their money in Sg. surreal and contrived.

sorry back to HKM. i think jago close is an excellent choice of location. the corner coffeeshop at Jalan tua kong also. The man who used to fry his HKM and subsequently CKT when the coffeeshop renovated, is retired.

bb-tony said...

yup, am still hungover.
Madam Low is the name of the coffee shop at 196 Joo Chiat Road. They have 2 shophouses separated by a 7-11. if lunch time too hot, they can openup the other shophouse space as its airconed.

cactuskit said...

Ahh... I think I know where Madam Low is. Its near the junction of the Joo Chiat Place/ Joo Chiat Rd junction, just across the open carpark? Will try.

Leslie, thats a great idea. If given the choice, I sure go for the all-in combos.

mossil said...

Hey hey!! Please tell me where are the other top 2 hokkien mee stores in singapore??? thankies!!

ieat said...

That would be Hainan Hokkien Mee at Golden Mile FC and Nam Sing at Old Airport Road. Check them out at my Hokkien Mee Label

cactuskit said...

mossil58, you must try the oyster HKM at Kim's (Joo Chiat Place) outlet. Simply umphh!!! Not the normal HKM but the oyster HKM. Oohhhh....

ieat said...

I think the Lor 29 Geylang HKM still beats the XO HKM in terms of ooommph. But they are both quite different, so I think you will need to try both and decide for yourself which is better.

cactuskit said...

In terms of ommphh, I rate both equally. Yes, both are different. Should try both. Other than a few Ieaters, everyone else I brought there (over 30) all gave 2 thumbs up.

ieat said...

The XO Hokkien Mee post is here:

Do leave you comments on the XO Hokkien Mee over there!

mossil said...

I'm definitely going to try out these recommendations! My current fave is at the Chomp Chomp hawker centre. So let's see if the top 3 here can beat the serangoon garden neighbourhood favourite. :)

ieat said...

Which one at Chomp Chomp is your favourite?

mossil said...

I think its called ah hock hokkien mee.. run by this old uncle who recently just came back after a long hiatus. Have you tried it?

ieat said...

Yes I have. You better try Lor 29 before they close because it is better.

khim said...

i've got news from my colleague tat yesterday e group went to eat but e whole coffeeshop is closed!! ='(

ieat said...

Yesterday they held their Seventh Month dinner. I just called them. They will be opened today till Sunday last day.

EastCoastLife said...

ieat,
The 'chicken' problem is obviously getting out of hand. They can be found every where!

I was at a Eunos kopitiam (opposite Eunos MRT) to buy supper last week and there were 3 tables of middle-aged and elderly Singapore men flirting with scantily clad China women.

Then there is Chinatown too.

I'll be watching this area like a hawk and turn this into a political issue if it gets out of hand!

ieat said...

You think the gahment don't know? The question is why haven't they done anything yet? Or is this a way to populate Singapore?

EastCoastLife said...

The top leaders don't know. Your questions I can answer you in private.

jems said...

thanks to the ieaters I had a chance to have this before they close shop tmr. Hmmm have to say as a one off experience it was just average for me. The sauce isn't that power and not enuf wok hei. So based on this experience Cactuskit might be happy to know my vote goes to Kim's Joo Chiat XO :)
However if you're at Smith Street FC, do try the 921 Yishun Hokkien Mee (red zone i think?). I prefer the portion of more beehoon over noodles and also like the sauce and the thinner yellow they use :) So far had it twice and been happy both times :)

cactuskit said...

Your recommendation confirm must try then. I love HKM!
