Old Swee Kee: The Resurrection of an Icon?

I dare say that the legendary Swee Kee Chicken Rice served the "World Best" Chicken rice in their heyday. Actually, it is not that hard to be "World Best" since this style of Chicken Rice is typically Singaporean and if you are the best in Singapore, you would probably be the best in the world. But then, the rest of the world may not know how to appreciate it so there really is no point in calling it "World Best" in the first place. I guess it is just quite satisfying to say "World Best" just as it is quite shiok to say "Shiok"(It's so tasty) and "Wah lao eh!" (Oh my goodness!).
Anyway, a stall calling itself "Old Swee Kee" is bound to attract the attention of chicken rice lovers who are today still reminiscing the "Golden Age" of Chicken Rice when Swee Kee was still around. There was no competition back then. If a tourist was in town and you wanted to showcase the best that Singapore had to offer, you brought them to Swee Kee. Of course, if your guest is very high class and you had a company account, you would bring him to Mandarin's Chatterbox. But for the typical kiasu, every want cheap-and-good Singaporean, Swee Kee was the place to go.
So when Cactuskit SMSed me excitedly one day (don't ask me how I can tell he is excited from an SMS - one just knows) that Swee Kee is back, it did not take me too long to go down to see for myself if indeed the legend has been resurrected.
To cut a long story short rather than prolonging the agony like Ryan Seacrest in American Idol and risk getting "Pui Chao Nua"(spat at in disgust), let me tell you that Swee Kee is sort of back but perhaps not in the way that is going to create the same excitement as when our Table Tennis Team beat South Korea and eventually won the Silver medal. Well done, Team Singapore! Ah Roo, Ah Roo, Ah Rooooooo!
OK, back to my story. Remember there was a stall I blogged before called Rui Kee at North Bridge Road who also claimed to have some Swee Kee Roots? Well, Rui Kee closed the North Bridge Road stall and reopened here in Joo Chiat under the new brand name "Old Swee Kee". Ooooohhhhh......... I hear you say. But all is not bad. The fact is that the Lao Ban Niang's husband used to work in the original Swee Kee and is the cousin of the owner. And, the last remnant of the Swee Kee brand up till now is the restaurant near Senai Airport also called Swee Kee Chicken Rice. This stall is actually run by the husband while his wife runs this new stall in Joo Chiat. So yes, Swee Kee is back but it is not really a "Resurrection from the Dead" like that of Chin Chin.
But that does not mean that you are not getting a great chicken rice experience. I was there within a week of their opening and even though they are still ironing out some operational details, I was pleasantly surprised by the chicken rice there which had that touch of old world authenticity.
The chicken was prepared the traditional way, which means no soaking in ice water after cooking. Instead it is dunked quickly into a little salt water and left on the tray to make sure all that yummy chicken juices don't get drained out. The flesh was tender and tasty without being overly "chickeny". Of course the skin was not as perfect as the ice water dunked ones but I must say that I am beginning to appreciate this style of chicken more and more. 4.25/5
The rice was not as fragrant as I liked. But I found out later from the Lao Ban Niang that they are still working on the cooking equipment as they did not managed to get the fire hot enough to fry the oil. They told me that it would be fixed by next week. 4/5
For the chilli, they have 2 varieties. The standard one shown in the middle and the special reserve version (front) which regulars and those in the know (like you) can request for. The special version is made from chilli padi and packs an extra punch. The ginger sauce is very good. Roughly chopped so that you still get the nice fibre and has enough bite to it.
One last thing I have to say about Old Swee Kee. For those of you who always have problems with friends insisting on eating Kampung chicken, you would be pleased to know that Old Swee Kee sells both types of chicken, so that everyone will be satisfied. Just for the record, they sell three normal chickens for every kampung chicken. So most people still prefer the soft, tender, voluptuous chicken rather than the sinewy Kampung Chicken! But hey, you have your right to like Kampung Chicken and I defend your right to like it even though I don't.
Conclusion
It isn't really Swee Kee resurrected, but it is still a great place to eat chicken rice. So, if you are a self professed chicken rice lover, I am sure you will make a beeline to the restaurant very soon, won't you?

The fluffiness of the rice is so visibily nice with the "alien" drawn circles on it done during midnite? By the way the spirals / centrics are nicely done and may I vote this is the first time we ever see chicken rice presented in this pattern....very good idea.

I went on the 3rd day of its opening. Chanced upon it while looking for grub in the Joo Chiat area. Enjoyed the meal. Old school. Most of the clients that day were older folks. Spoke to one of them, who said he had been waiting for this stall to open for some time.
Now there is another chicken rice wihtin a 2 km from my place to makan. Twe Kee, Rui Kee, Marine Parade Central, Katong Shopping Centre, Eunos, Joo Chiat Place, BTK, 5 Star, Nam Sing... wahh...
interesting about the ratio of kampung chicken vs regular chicken.
When I was growing up, I remembered during festivals, one of the highlights was chicken rice or chicken curry made with chicken which is neutered..."eam kay" so to speak in Penang Hokkien. This chicken is huge, tender, doesn't taste chickeny, and memory serves it to be perfect in every way.
The giant size is possibly attributed to male genetics, but neutering somehow invokes a vision that the pent up inability to produce testosterone (do chickens produce testosterone?), channels all its energy into growing. Formula for a new generation of eunuch bodybuilders? :-)
I am wondering if today's "modern" farming of chickens include injections of steriods together with their shots of antibiotics and whatever chemicals; in addition to force feeding?

Tried Rui Kee chicken rice. To me just run-of-the-mill food, except that the chilli sauce was quite good. Don't intend to go out of the way try it at Joo Chiat.

Went today at 11:30am monday 25th Aug to try and the stall is shut. No notice or info at all why it is close? Disappoint going all the way there to Joo Chiat. I thought the stall only start business last week as reported?

Nothing fantastic... in fact a waste of calories.. the chilli sauce sucks and the rice got no standard.. Not worth going back again..

The day this post came out, I was at Wisma Atria's Sargent Chicken Rice. The standard has dropped but the price went up!

I have to give my 2cents worth on this as it was a REAL disappointment. It lacked the essential "se, xiang, mei, wei". When the chicken was first served to us, my heart almost sank. The chicken is scrawny (we didn't order Kampung chicken), the meat tasteless and somewhat hard (not tender). The chicken skin is not smooth & shiny, but looks old and old.
The side dish -claypot hongshao toufu-was also salty.
We have followed your recommendations to some other food here and have been pleased with the quality so far, until this one. I think I can easily get better tasting chicken rice anywhere else in any hawker center. Don't even deserve a score of 3.

I went there 21 Sept 2008 (Sunday), bought a $4 normal white chicken rice pack.
I did not eat chicken rice freqently, but I tried Five Star, Chin Chin, Yet Con, Rui Kee... This is one that I like the most, it is simple, easy and nice to eat.
Since I know about ieatishootipost, I visited some, like Char Kway Teow, Laksa, etc..., I use GPS to find the place, but usually the address here does not have the postal code for easy search, so have to key in the road name...
bedok reservoir road market got a stall selling chicken rice . the name is xiang ji chicken rice . i rate it 4.25 and above . greatly recommend . haha
Just ate chicken rice again at Swee Kee with my family. Nice meal. Really spoilt for choice here in the East. : )

e old one along north bridge road was closed then they moved to joo chiat. but a couple of months ago, i started noticing a new stall a few stalls before e old stall - yellow sign board naming Rui Kee Chicke Rice..
e previous stall along north bridge road was in a "red" building but tis new one i saw was few stalls before e "red" building lei.. maybe one of these days, i'll go check to see if it's opened in e afternoon..

I really do not know why there is so much rave about Swee Kee's chicken, whether "Old" or resurreted. Must be the historical context when Swee Kee was THE name for decent chicken rice in the absence of more competition in the good old days of yore. All the resurrected Swee Kee's so far have been a disappointment when compared to better competitors around. The really best Hainanese chicken that I have ever tasted this side of the Causeway is unfortunately no more. It was at a corner coffee shop at the beginning of Joo Chiat (nest to the shopping complex) in front of the former ubiquitious fruit stalls. It was run by an old lady and her daughter, and only operated from 8pm daily until her limited number of chicken runs out. Nothing in the market today can compare to the 2kg corn-fed pullet, juicy pale yellow skin and meat and her really unique chilli sauce (not found anywhere). Her sliced fresh-water fish salad was also outstanding. What a pity!! I get my chicken rice fix in Seremban and KL, but will tolerate what is available here from time to time.
So far the closest taste to the legendary Swee Kee Chicken Rice was Rui Kee at North Bridge Road (now closed). The Lao Pan Niang helped to set up Old Swee Kee at Joo Chiat, but had since left about 3 weeks ago. Sadly, so has the taste and fragrant Swee Kee rice.
The owner is actually the boss of Bai Li Ju (the guy who claim to relish and preserve great food of the past - it was in the Straits Times a month or so ago). Lao Pan Niang is not the lady boss as what most think. The shop at Seah Street as well as another at 208 Jalan Besar (Maude Road) bearing the name Old Swee Kee belong to this boss. However, the rice at Seah Street is no where the same as that in Joo Chiat, even when Lao Pan Niang was around. The Jalan Besar stall serves only roast chicken - as I was told by the Joo Chiat staffs. It seems to me that the emphasis now is not Swee Kee style of chicken rice but Zhu Chao and Madarin Chatterbox style of chicken rice which they claim is more fragrant.
Yesterday was my last patronage of "Swee Kee Chicken Rice". Sigh, sad, ..... Old Swee Kee should have stuck to selling Swee Kee style of chicken rice and not any other chicken rice. Another wonderful recipe lost!
Anybody know where has this Joo Chiat outlet shifted to? I know its closed for good when I checked out the Joo Chiat sometime after CNY 2009.
