Carrot Cake: Lots of Stalls at Chomp Chomp with no name

You would think that any stall that can do a white carrot cake will be able to do a black one as well right? Afterall, it is a matter of adding black sauce and how hard can that be? But the fact is that most Carrot Cake stalls I know of are either good for the white or the black but not both. Will that be your observation as well?
For this particular stall, it is the white version that is the best version. The carrot cake fried till it is nice and crispy and the nice savoury flavour comes from the secret recipe fish sauce which has gone through some tweaking, plus the addition of prawns when they fry the carrot cake. The outsourced carrot cake is not bad, quite soft, according to Jems who likes it this way. Sumosumo also gave his approval for the white without chilli. 4.25/5
This particular stall has been around for quite a while. It is one of these Heritage Hawker stalls where the business has been passed down from father to son. The old man used to peddle his carrot cake around the Philip St area in Serangoon and settled at Chomp Chomp since 1976. The old man is still around, but his son has well and truly taken over and Dad refused to have his picture taken and insist that the limelight be shone upon his son instead. But after much coaxing he finally relented. I just wanted to post his picture so that those of you who have been eating at this stall for eons will perk up and say, "Hey, I have been buying from this man since his son was still waist high!" Hands up anyone?
Conclusion
Very good white Carrot Cake and worth having a plate on your table as part of your hawker feast.

I have 2 sons, one likes white, the other likes black. So it is a headache whenever I tapau. I always buy 2 packs in black so I don't have to wait too long.
My other son needs to try this, then he'll be converted.
I'm really surprised that a review for Chey Sua Carrot Cake hasn't been done yet. Considering that it's also right next to one of the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore, Tian Tian Lai, at Block 127 Lorong 1A Toa Payoh (which also hasn't been reviewed), there should be no reason why you haven't made a visit to that hawker centre yet. :)

I have tried the hokkien mee there but did not bring my camera then. Don't worry Chey Sua is on my to do list.
In my opinion, the white carrot cake at Chey Sua is much better when fried with loads of chilli. Without the chilli, its like Golden City carrot cake without ikan bilis.

yeah many stalls didn't have a proper name. so sometimes it's quite difficult to find them.
And i agree places that does their carrot cake well, either their white or black. I think i never see a stall that can really does both rendition really well. But i still prefer black to white

I have eaten Chey Sua Carrot Cake couple of times,still can't figure out why it's so popular.
Maybe not too many CTK in Toa Payoh? Maybe decades of loyal customers? But the white with lots of chilli is really quite nice. You must have liked it to eat it a couple of times. Do you live in Toa Payoh? : )
i agree. I have tried Chey Sua a few times (usually order it as side dish) and fail to taste any special. It taste ordinary each time I have it. I think this Chomp Chomp's one taste better
Do give the black carrot cake at Toa Payoh Lorong 4 hawker centre a try (the food centre in front of Lee Fun Nam Kee). The carrot cake is cooked by 3 very old ladies in their 70s. They have been there for decades. The black carrot cake is the tradtional type, where the pieces of kueh are quite big.
Other interesting things in the same Lorong 4 hawker centre are the ngoh hiang, popiah, and in my opinion, the laksa is pretty good too.
Hmm..find this cake really savoury, chewy and crispy to the last bit...apetizing and not jer lat at all...much better compared to the others
No, I don't live there I usally go there for the Yong Tau Foo at Blk 116 and Hokkien mee.I tried the carrot cake a few times, because of it's high rating given by makansutra.And I was there, one time might be their off form day, but after fews times, it still not impress me, too ordinary to me.

I stand by my statements when I say both are the best at their respective dishes. People are bound to disagree. If everyone agreed, there would only be 1 store for each dish in Singapore. :)

the carrot cake is not very fantasic...give it a try at the tampines market located at 137 tampines st 11....there are 2 stalls there...Xiong kee fried carrot cake....both the white and black are nice....give it a try and u will be back for more...
