Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee is back!

This stall has moved back to their original location at 396 East Coast Road.

Looks like Uncle Alex just cannot sit still. He had originally intended to take a 6 month sabbatical when he had to close the stall at East Coast Road due to renovations. But the good news is that he is back frying Hokkien Mee just after a 2 week break.

The stall is located in the compound of the Orchard Hostel which is right opposite Four Seasons Durian Cafe and there's lot of free parking within the compound. The stall is sort of hidden inside so you can't really see it from the road.

Many of his regulars still have not found his new location yet, so here is your chance to eat it while there is still no queue!

What to do next:

Read the old posts here and here
After your Hokkien Mee you can go for Durians across the road!
Or if it is still early enough, go eat some Black Pepper Crabs at Eng Seng!

Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee
1 Telok Kurau Lor J (Old Civil Defence Camp)
Opposite Malacca Hotel and Four Seasons Durian
Closed Mondays
11.30am to 9.30pm

It's like a minute's drive away from Kim's Hokkien Mee at Jln Eunos. The good Hokkien mee stalls are congregating in the same area! Great for foodies.

I didn't know the Hokkien Mee here is good. Have bought durians from this area but haven't tried anything else.

He just moved here. The Black Pepper crab opposite Four Season is excellent and always long queue. Sells out by 8 plus.

New place is much easier to park. Can visit more often. Lots of parking in the compound. : )

Just don't park and leave the place. The jaga will stop you. Only patrons of the makan outlets can park there.

Just wondering if the stall will be shifting back to their old headquarters at East Coast Road after renovations are done?

Still the best around...

Aiyah doc, we missed the pork slices! That cannot do! =x

A search in the directory for 1 Joo Chiat Place showed the place nearer to Joo Chiat Rd.Went looking for 1 Joo Chiat Place couldn't find the Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee.End up eating at Kim's. Is the address right.

ieat said...

It is on the opposide side of Still Road. On streetdirectory it is Joo Chiat Place on one side of Still road and Joo Chiat Pl on the other. I assume that Pl=Place.

fatme said...

OK.So must be near to Eng Seng crabs, will try next week again.Thanks.

Wow! Thanks for this post! Have been waiting with bated breath to see where they moved to. Being an "Easterner" myself....am mighty glad they decided to stay East too!

I just visited them today. Thanx for the heads up. It is my favourite fried prawn mee stall. However, their business not good. Uncle complained that many people do not know where the place is. They are also hidden away behind. Do spread the word.

Uncle is not certain if they will move back. Issues like completion of renovation and rent are yet to be ironed out.

I miss geylang lor 29 hokkien mee badly. This is the best! And yes I'm addicted. Sad to say, I did not manage to find the location.

That day, I take bus 15 with my girlfriend go eat.

We happen to find it opposite of the Durian thing, at first we cross the traffic and did not find it, then we saw 1 civil defence thing and went inside .

The coconut drinks there very exp, small size yet $2.50 , and manage find Uncle Alex store at the corner.

The standard is still the same, my number 1 hokkien mee ranking in singapore.

Thanks IEat for the info too.

I wanted to go and try the hokkien mee but just wonder is the stall still there or have they shifted?

ieat said...

I think they are still there.

Latest update as of 1st Feb, the original coffeeshop is now refurbished and already open - they had their soft launch on 28th Jan - Alex is back there!

Located opp. the current Al Forno.

Thanks everyone for your updates :)

Saw a lady looking quite lost too yesterday when she saw that the stall at Telok Kurau was vacant.

This is my no. 1 favourite Hokkien Mee stall.

The whole lot was closed and vacated when I drove by yesterday. What happened ?

guys, let me introduce a fried prawn mee at Cecuit road (macpherson estate) long market. Near to the ATM 2nd row. Opp the pig organ soup. Tell me is it better than the geylang one. please comment.

I dunno about Circuit Road.

But I had my fix today here with my brother and his friend. We also had carrot cake and all I can say is, power!

Business is markedly improving and picking up ever since Alex relocated back to this original coffeeshop, which is spruced up.

Da-baoed five $5 packets and $5 Carrot Cake for my parents & aunties who were mahjong-ing at my place. After the HKM was wrapped in opeh leaf, the gravy all soaked into the noodles...

Heaven!

fatme said...

I have agreed too the suprisingly his carrot cake was really very good.Wonder how come wasn't review by ieat.

Ya, my mom seemed to love the carrot cake when I bought a packet of it for her. Is the or luak any good?

I brought my group of friends on monday and sad to say they were not at Lor J anymore =( where did he moved?

Anonymous said...

epdrama he has shifted back to the original location. but i think he's closed on Mondays.

fatme said...

Tried their Lor Luak once,no intention of ordering again.Yes they closed on Mondays.Had their Hokkien Mee and Carrot Saturday the coffee shop staff service was really very impressive, very courteous and friendly.

Anonymous said...

Tried the hokkien mee after they shifted back to the original location in East Coast Rd after the coffee-shop was renovated. However, the one doing the cooking is not Alex

ieat said...

Alex just had an operation and should be back in action soon.

I think Lor 29 HKM is over-hyped. Not as agood as either Ah Hock or Cher Jian at Chomp Chomp or even Nam Sing at Old Airport Road. The long wait and also $4 for a small plate put me off.

fatme said...

Boon, was Alex cooking.I have tried all the stalls you mention before.I had all my fried mee done by Alex no way this is over-hyped.

wahcow said...

was there last week and alex was not back yet....still recuperating at home....

just wanna say that his disciples fries a mean HKM too....maybe much better than alot of HKM out there...but still short of Alex's "ba wu"....moohahahahahah

ieat said...

Aiya. Still not back yet? I am waiting to go down to eat! I think he is taking the opportunity to have a good rest.

boys before flowers said...

may i clarify something? im getting confused about the location. Uncle alex's HKM is at Telok Kurau Lor J or Jalan Eunos? Can someone get back to me?

chaozhouzi said...

Boys before flowers, this HKM is now back at east coast road within a stone throw of beach road prawn mee and close to caltex station. It is in a coffee shop a little off the main road. Bon Appetit.

holybro said...

Now Alex is at East Coast Road. Near Alforno's and the Caltex station.

When I went there some weeks back, it was his 'disciple' who fried the hokkien mee for me. I still prefer Alex's version though... Guess his 'disciple' has not fully mastered the skills.

Anyway, this stall is my favourite stall for my fried hokkien mee fix. I think it is quite value for money, but you must tabao and must be $5 or more. Somehow, eating there gets you slightly less, at least thats what I feel.

I also like Nam Sing's fried hokkien mee. Nam Sing's one is slightly different. It taste 'lighter' so you don't feel so sick after eating alot. Over here, you eat fried hookien mee for its fine taste. Alex's version, it eat it for its robust taste. But $5 portion don't get you much noodles and prawns. I also don't like its opening hours, will never get to eat it after work.

fatme said...

Is Alex back doing the cooking.

Anonymous said...

I just tried the hokkien mee at its 396 east coast road location yesterday... and i must say i was disappointed by the taste. It wasn't that nice at all. The chilli wasn't sweet or spicy enough, the prawns were not fresh (ok which stall's prawns are), and other than the pork lard taste in the noodles, there wasn't any other taste at all. It pales in comparison to Swee Guan.

someone said alex was in UK frying for the londonites ? is he back already ?????? ........
