What Dialect Group do our Foodies Belong to Poll
Thanks to all who have written in to nominate their dialect group. The polls are now up for you to vote. To simplify things, I have only allowed one vote. That is because if I gave everyone two votes to denote paternal and maternal dialect groups, then those who have parents from the same dialect group would only get one vote and that would skew the stats. So just pick the dialect group that you feel you most belong to.
Since we the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion...... I have also included the Malays, Indian and Others so that no one is left out. If you are Chinese and your dialect group is not represented then just pick "others" and write a comment to let us know you represent your dialect group.
In case you are thinking that aside from the language, it would be difficult to distinguish between the dialect groups just by looks, then I would like ask if you can guess what dialect group the old man in the picture belongs to?
Have fun and don't forget to cast your vote!

hmmm.. am surprised at e stats as of now.. hokkiens ranked 57.1% while teochews is only 28.6%?!!
go teochews!
When the poll is starting the numbers will sway quite a bit. But once a good number of people have polled then it will more or less stablize.
The Cantonese are catching up :)
Voted.
Teochews 37.3% now.
Singapore has got a lot of Teochews and Hokkiens.
Sigh, I belong to Cantonese group, but i doubt it will catch up.
hokkien and teochew sure win lah....
they form the majority of our population.
Who is this old man in de pic? Les, ur grandfather ah?
that old man is a hainanese! see from his forehead?
Lee Kuan Yew also has that forehead, but he is hakka leh. How come can tell dialect from forehead one meh?
from forehead ? can tell like this ?
i see the forehead and i get a blank..... hahahah
i see mine in the mirror....cant tell !! no sticker to say "teochew" also
oi leslie why you post my picture?
Ay sumo, cannot say like that. What we want to know is the proportion of the dialect group that are foodies. At the moment it would seem that the Hainanese are ahead since their population is so small, yet they go so many readers here!
hainanese supposedly have flat heads... haha.. i would have to say it's quite true. My brother and my dad have flatish heads.
Btw ieat, you use a 17-55 f2.8 for your foodshots?
look more like a typical balding. the cut of the hair made it looked extra flat with the combing only in the middle and pull it to the back aka kalipok style complete the square shape. it is not the shape of the head lah. it is just how hainanese likes to style their head LOL
I wonder where you got there picture from man Leslie! LOL!! IS he a real hainanese?!?! LOL!!
embarrasingly enough i wasn't even sure it was a man to begin with... :o
Oh, he is a man who who has been serving out a certain dish for 54 years at a very well known eatery! I thought that some of you might recognize him immediately.
All will be revealed soon!
Looks like after a slow start, the Hokkien Huey Kuan are finally catching up to the Teochew Clan. Might even overtake us! Must get our Teochew Ah Hia and Ah Muays to Keh1 You1!
quop: LOL, i was thinking exactly the same thing!
Ah...my guess: Hainanese. Got prize for guessing or not? :P
Hainanese?
I'll say the old man is a teochew.. probably ieat's grandpa?
I would say he's a Hainanese....I am one too!
The unique head shape is a dictinct of a type of aborigines which is called Austronesian people whom lived in the island thousands of years ago. Hainan was not a developed place and very much isolated just like how Australia was isolated from the rest of the world until few hundred years ago.
Just like hainan, australia were also a place where convicts were sent there to be isolated from the world last time. Many of these islands preserved their aborigines community and when humanity went there, they kinda 'crossbred' with them and so are somehow related.
The times when Hainan island was an exile place was sometime in the song dynasty or yuan dynasty. That is about 1000 years ago. So hainanese kept the distinct headshape which is a feature of those aborigines just like how indonesian people still kept the distinct small body size which is a feature of a type of diminutive race called the hobbit which once roamed Sumatra islands.
We are all related to our past. Austronesian people are also related to taiwanese people. Also related to some philipines people. For those who are interested , you can read more here

Ieat, you have revealed the dialect of the man yourself. Click on the picture and the caption is stated "Old Hainanese Man"
Hehehehe (:
Ha ha, now you let the cat out of the bag!
Are you the type who also likes to tell people the punchline before the end of the joke? :)
So now that you all know he is Hainanese, the next question is, what is he famous for?
Answer to be revealed next week.
lol. That's funny. :) Chicken rice lo.
He is the boss of yakun hainanese kopi
although pic says he is hainanese but i think he is probably teochew. hainanese old men dont wear black and the way his hair is combed, probably a teochew, ya.
He's catching up with the latest fashion cause black makes one look slimmer :D
我吃我拍 我吃吃吃
Looks like the Hokkiens managed to surge ahead and the Cantonese are also quickly catching up! If you haven't voted yet please log in and vote!
I think the man in the picture looks like a Hakka.
