Delicious Muffins: Hotel Quality Homemade Puff Pastry
Chicken Pie $2.80
Everytime I think about Chicken Pies, I am reminded of the ones they used to sell in the neighbourhood bakeries in the seventies and eighties. You know, the ones that were shaped like big muffins with a dome shaped top and made with puff pastry. Man, they were good. But then again as I have said before, nostalgia is perhaps one of the best taste enhancers.
Damien had told me about these Chicken Pies a long time ago, but it was only of late that several others have reminded me that they really should be on the blog. If you ever wonder how I end up blogging a certain place, well, this is a good example. It is a combination of what I feel like eating that day combined with several people recommending the same item all around the same time.
Chock full of Chunky Chicken
Anyway, I found myself at this shop which a few people have said sells some of the best chicken pies and curry puffs in Singapore. Ironically, the shop's name was "Delicious Muffins"! It turns out that the chef owner had been a Chef at Hilton before he left to start his own business here. That explains why the Chicken Pies here remind me of the ones that you usually find in Hotel Cafes.
I love the puff pastry here. It is not overly flaky but is still light and buttery. It has a nice amount of chewiness on the inside layers which tastes great as it has absorbed the flavours of the chicken filling. The filling itself is generous with lots of chunky chicken pieces. I felt that it could do with a little bit of cream in the gravy and the flavour of the white pepper was a little overpowering but that might please pepper lovers. 4.25/5
Curry Puffs $2
If you think about it, aren't all Curry Puffs supposed to be made from Puff Pastry? That is why they are called Curry "Puff" right? The Malay version is rightly called Epok Epok but it is the Old Chang Kee version with which Curry Puff really is a misnomer. Perhaps our colloquial "Kalipok" is more suitable. Kalipok is of course Singlish for Curry Puff, but the Hokkien word "Pok" can denote something deep fried and puffed up as in Tau "Pok" (Fried Bean Curd). Or does "Pok" mean "Puff" as well? Perhaps someone from the Hokkien Hway Guan can enlighten us?
It is very hard to find a Curry Puff made from Puff Pastry that is not overly oily and I have avoided eating them because the combination of oil and spices often give me a bad case of indigestion. However, the Curry Puffs here were great. The Puff Pastry was thin but resilient and the Curry Puff were chock full of buttery potatoes and chicken pieces in light but fragrant curry spices. Definitely one of the best Puff Pastry Curry Puffs I have come across. 4.25/5
(Polar Cafe used to make really great Curry Puffs of this sort, but nowadays, sadly, the standards have dropped due to mass production).
Conclusion
Great place to drop in for some rather nice Chicken Pies and Curry Puffs!

Yes, this is one yummylicious chicken pie which I would highly recommend. I ate this almost weekly at one stage when I was attending a course at the Photographic Society of Singapore nearby.

wah lau.. early in e morning see these kind of picture made me super hungry lor!!! :(
check out also the chicken pies and curry puff at m hotel @ anson rd ... bunhiong
Hey bunhiong, no doubt the pies at M hotel are good, but they are not going to cost $2.80 are they?
Speaking of which, Mandarin hotel used to make those kind of pies with the dome shaped tops. Not sure whether they are still around.
Its too bad this place does not do beef pies. They'd be great!
No doubt the puff may taste good but to ask me go all the way to eat this kind of food in the city, mad are you not leslie?
The chicken pies used to be real creamy. Guessed they cut back on the cream recently...
M Hotel has already very good chicken pies but I prefer the chicken pies here as the crust is more buttery and the fillings generous and creamier :)
The curry puff is excellent too - moist and rich.
Wow the chicken pie & curry puff look good! I think my mom bought the muffins from here before & they were not bad. How were the muffins Les? Did you try them?
I've heard about M hotel's curry puff and chicken pie too but have yet to try.
Leslie, what you doing at Simei? Walking up and down the outside of NTUC, you looked like waiting for a good moment to rob NTUC! LOL!!!
How come you did not say Hi? I was looking for an accomplist.
The ones at tip top at amk are also good, probably the best and cheapest curry puffs in singapore IMO.
anonymous (2.37pm)- this blog is for your info only. no one is forcing u to do anything.
IMO, the best curry puff/chicken pie using puff pastry is still baked at the Singapore Swimming club. and only $1.20 for the curry puff and $2.50 for the chicken pie. eat it after a swim.. shiokers!
GOD is the muffin that is nice ahahah
OK so when you inviting us to SSC for curry puff sumosumo?
the chicken pies at M hotel have too much chicken meat, but they're still nice. the pies go at 50% discount after 6pm. not sure if they still practise this now.
Didn't because you seems to be on some mission so didn't want to disrupt it haha! Anyway nice to see you in person. :)
Yeah, I was wondering if I should go into NTUC to get some nice fruits, then decided it was too crowded.
Leslie, have you considered adding a shoutbox on your site? So brothers can chat about miscellaneous stuff on this page.
enjoyed both the chicken pie and curry puff...the chicken pie had just the right amount of creaminess
Oh yeah, they are all at the forum as we speak! Don't tell me you don't know about our forum?
Oh really, ok here i cum!
..the auntie sometime do take CNY cookies as well, got to check wif her.
haha, the unclein the photo at the shop still got hair..so can guess how long the photo taken ago.
As for the muffin, try the banana walnut..more outstanding than the other favour.
Abit down the road..there the famous Les Sat..next to the chk rice stall. sell great cakes as well.
Chicken Pies...
Surprisingly my favourite is really a nostalgic experience. If anyone can recall the 'sunshine brand', I would usually go down to my convenience stall as a small boy and grab a huge chicken pie - albeit frozen - and put it in the store's microwave oven for about 2 mins. The end result is a lip-smacking piping hot chicken pie with huge chunks and oozing steaming gravy with the lil' chicken shreds, soaked in by the puff pastry. That was it.
Well, the other impressive one I have off memory is definitely Boulevard's @ Joo Chiat. The buttery aroma of the baking pies is simply too hard to resist.
I prefer my pie to be filled with lotsa gravy, not dry.
P.S: Was taking a walk with bunny along Bencoolen two days ago (on the way to eating chao tar bee hoon @ Jalan Besar for dinner, that's another story) when our noses were pulled into Sunshine Plaza by the whiff of Thai Food! Saw a certain Victor's Kitchen and pple eating dim sum too...Forget Parklane zhar yuntun
Wow, for the first time, I've seen a shop that was featured here before it was featured. Sunshine Plaza was one of my favourite haunts thanks to the bountiful anime merchandise stores, and I've seen this shop before. My mom buys lots of muffins from it, as the muffins are quite moist and suitable for local palates. Haven't tried the curry puffs, will do so.
i have been eating the muffins since the day they startd. I stopped for a year, I went back last saturday for my usual banana/walnut and chocolate muffin. I noticed that they have shrunk in size, the chocolate muffin is slightly lighter in color and not as chocolately as before but its still very good. It used to taste kind of rich , still is though as they use real chocolate. It now cost 2 dollars unlike the 1.80 cts before.
The price of the chicken pie also went up slightly, used to cost $2.50.
Ya Les, it's called Delicious Muffins cos the Banana Walnut muffins are so good, esp str from oven as I always pre-order, otherwise always sold out. I eat till so fat now...you must try it. But curry puffs, chicken pies oso good la..
I tried this chicken pie. It is yummy and very very hot!
Why not blog the parklane zha wanton mee beside it. Quite famous but I don't quite like.
The parklane zha wanton mee is so-so only.
I think the muffins are expensive. The one at Tanjong Pagar Plaza sells them cheaper (1.30) and bigger. I've tasted both and Tanjong Pagar one is buttery and better.
Their chocolate muffins have a crispy top that's interesting to bite into, and it remains so even after half an hour (in the paper bag). I didn't get to try the other muffins so I don't know if it's the same for the rest.
I understand that this stall sells wonderful chicken pies... Tried to place an order through the phone... Wendy was just so rude !!! What does she mean by not taking advance orders starting today till mth end, and dun ask for the reason why?
Why is Singapore service standard always so TERRIBLE ? Never understand ... No matter how good the food is but this type of service to customers? I dun know if i will ever buy from them again
Chocolate n Spice at shunfu market food court (bhd Thomson CC) has yummy cheese muffins and banana muffins.
Also have brownies, good price tarts. the muffin is S$1.20. some pple buy boxes for the office or home. lao shi say is too sweet for her but i like it.....
I would reccommend chicken pies from york hotel by Roger Heng. very heavenly
