What do you say when you eat something really good?

There was an interesting series of comments one of the previous posts where one of the readers, James, made the remark that my use of the word "marvellicious" was exactly the same word that his daughter uses. Of course, marvellicious is not an official word in the Oxford Dictionary. It was merely a combination of "marvellous" and "delicious". Then he went on to tell me about other words that his daughter uses like "Shiok a doo doo" and "Bombastic".

I thought it would be fun to find out what is everyone's favourite word when you come across something really tasty. I suspect that "Shiok" might be a popular one or perhaps you have a better and more imaginative superlative you care to share?

lol @ shiok a doo doo. That's a cute one!

My pet words are "yummilicious" and "shiok-ilicious". When describing good creamy chocolate, it'd be either "chocolatey" or "chocolicious". Yeah, not terribly creative, I know. But they work!

You actually say "song" for food? Its more like a word for when you getting a massage or something and they manage to press on the right spot right?

I learnt this from an ex-colleague a long time ago..."shiokalingam"...thought it was cute and so Singaporean!

ieat said...

Oh yes! I haven't heard that one for a long time! However, you do know that "lingam" actually means the male organ in Sanskrit right? So, Shiok-a-lingam has a pretty dubious connotation.

Oh yah..."shiokalingam". I remember that :)

Side track a bit but still on the topic of food lingo. In my previous company, I had some colleagues who were very creative in incorporating food into their dialogue.

One phrase is “kenna the kopi” – used to describe when one has a rude awakening. Eg “When Ah Seng saw his phone bill for this month, he really kenna the kopi!”

Another phrase is “jiak kali kway”, meaning eat curry chicken – used to describe a depressing situation cos curry chicken is sometimes served at wakes. Eg “Luckily we managed to salvage that service failure, otherwise sure jiak kali kway already.”

Hey Leslie,

Why not, we organize a competition, where people could submit pictures of their facial expressions when eating good food? The pics could be judged based on a few criteria like humour, how convincing it is, etc etc

Then the top 3 gets a prize...

I feel that this is a good way to let ALL readers of this blog participate

What say you and every one else here?

I think my eyes widen involuntarily and i breathlessly utter "omigod, this is so sedap". then before i waste time talking further, my motor neurons kick into overdrive and mouth goes to work again, munching / slurping audibly more of the oishi goodness.
