The Beef House: Bouncy Beef Ping Pong Balls

With liverpool, iwatch_ueat and introducing our latest makankaki, The Butcher

This is Happi Mummi's favourite Beef Noodle place and she insisted that I should blog it one day. So I hope she is looking at the pictures and drooling!

The stall is called the Beef House, but the only beef they sell are these Ping Pong Ball sized Beef Balls. This is not your run-of-the-mill beef noodle stall. It is Hakka style Beef noodles. That means you get your Beef Balls in a clear soup with thin bee hoon, kway teow, or the mee kia. They also serve other Hakka stuff like the Soon Kueh and Yong Tau Foo.

Now when I say Beef "Ping Pong" Balls, I really mean it. They were super bouncy and you get a serious temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) workout when you bite into them. I suspect that if I do drop one by mistake that it should just bounce back up onto the table! They were juicy and had a nice beef flavour. The beef balls are still made in-house so it is no surprise that I have never tasted anything quite like it anywhere else. 4/5

They ran out of kway teow that day so I had the mee kia instead. This is the type of noodles that you typically get with Hakka Yong Tau Fu, with a season minced pork to accompany it. Boy they were good! At least one of the best mee kia I have ever tasted. QQ enough to be a delight to the bite, yet soft enough to absorb the subtle flavours of the minced pork. The noodles were so good, I am rating them separately. 4.5/5

We also tried these super large Soon Kuehs that looked as good as they tasted. Chock full of dried shrimps and turnips, they were excellent. Tastewise, I think they are almost the same as other Soon Kuehs but it is the size that really sets them apart. 4/5

Conclusion

Really very few stalls that sell this style of Beef noodles. Although I liked the beef balls, my other kakis were less enthusiastic about it. The noodles were really memorable. Liverpool said the Yong Tau Foo here is pretty shiok too but I did not get to try it because they had sold out already.

This place serves one of the best beef ball soup Ive ever eaten. The beef balls come swimming in a bowl of tasty clear soup.

What I really like is the chili. Its tangy and spicy but not too hot to the extent that I sweat a lot. A value of money meal.

Patronised this stall for a long time and find it quite good, and the stall holder friendly. The soup is really good with the "cheng" beef flavour. However the beef balls are tasty, but a bit rough and coarse to the extent of being chewy as mentioned by LP1965. This is unlike the good old days Hock Lam St beef balls where they are smooth and bouncy, where the tendon beef balls has the light chewy texture, like those of the Thais' or the Pandan Beef ball at Tebrau in JB, which is similar to the original Hock Lam St beef balls.

This stall also sells the Hakka abacus seeds dish, beside yong tau foo and Hakka soon kueh.

yes they look exactly like the beefball soup in ntu canteen 2!

That could be the branch stall.

If I am not wrong, it's not actually "soon kuehs" It is "soon pan".

They're both brothers. At the NTU canteen, the brother sells other dishes like fish slice soup with fried egg (the fluffy kind you'd find at zhi char stall)

Shiok ballz!

I logged on to comment about them beefballs looking like those in canteet 2, but looks like others have beat me to it! The canteen 2 beefballs aren't as bouncy as you describe though, but i like it that way i get the feeling that theres more beef in it than starch (: Go try it someday and do a comparison!

I am glad that you followed eslim's recommendation to visit this place.

It is good no?

ieat said...

Oh yes it is good, as are most of eslim's recommendations!

Then perhaps a credit to him would be nice and appreciative.

The blog had already been updated immediately after it was pointed out.

Bro, remember I told you abt this place 3 years ago when our church office was still there...

Sorry ieat, I don't agree that their soon kuehs taste just the same as the others. The sticky and chewy texture of the skin already set them apart from the others. The ingredients inside need no mention and the kuehs actually go along very well with chilli sauce, though the same chilli sauce for the beef balls.

Four long years it had been, but I still remember the soon kueh, must get it again, today. That time, I had the YTH, it was good and worth waiting. The beefballs were something else, they were very chewy. I think it is from the tendon and ligament.

Went there to tabao the soon kueh. Couldn't resist so ordered the YTH and beef balls. This time round did not smack my lips as previously. The portion seem smaller and beef balls had shrunk. It is not so chewy. They must have heeded all the complaint of it being chewy. This time round I also feel thirsty from too much MSG. Noted that the soup is bland not like before. Verdict 2.5/5.
BTW anyone tried the "teochew" YTH down the road from here. The prep is diff from other YTH. Be warned, heard "teochew" YTH is a misnomer.

Ha ha, the thing about the size of the beef balls reminds me of the little joke about the Spanish Bullfight. When they complained that the beef balls at the adjacent restaurant were smaller than before, the waiter replied that sometimes the bull wins!

zhouzi said...

erhem, ieat, the customer was complaining about the size of the balls in the same resturant.
