Lau Hong Ser Rojak: The Undisputed Rojak Champion?
With iwatch_ueat and holydrummer
PASSION.....
One word that separates the good from the great. Passion is what makes this man fry and grind his own peanuts whiles other get theirs from a factory. It makes him insist on using only the best Heh Gor from Penang and making his own chilli. It causes him to continue toasting his You Char Kway over a small charcoal fire even though there is a queue an hour long waiting to eat his fare. It causes him to continue to treat each plate of Rojak as if it were his last. Oh yes, I love passion people.
Now people with passion can sometimes be perceived to be eccentric. The difference between someone who is eccentric and someone who is a downright obnoxious fusspot is that we admire what the eccentric one does. So when this stallowner insists on opening his stall from 4.38pm to 1.38am, we forgive him because he is a genius. It takes a real "Hou Lian Teochew Ah Hia" (Proud Teochew Man - and I mean it in a good sense) to be able to pull off a stunt like this and still have people calling up an hour ahead to place their orders.
So much for philosophising. Let's get down to the rojak.
Lau Hong Ser likes to serve his rojak freshly toasted with the thick, fragrant, chockful of peanuts sauce by the side. The sauce was as good as a Rojak Sauce can be. The You Tiao and Tau Pock were well toasted and crispy. What else can one ask for in a plate of rojak except for a shorter waiting time? 4.75.5
Conclusion
Who am I to argue with an hour long wait?

oh! I want to eat Rojak now! This is indeed one of my favourite dishes! Hmmm... must check this out someday!
btw, the opening hours is so interestingly "cute". :)
There is another stall in Toa Payoh HDB Food Court that serve the rojak with cuttlefish and kang kong. Price is reasonable and always get the crowds. U have to order and collect upon ur "number" is shown.
There is also another same outlet in Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central. This store is managed by his wife, but the standard is not as good.
I still like my Toa Payoh rojak at old airport!
I rather Q for the "Toa Payoh" Rojak at Old airport road market too.... (then again I m bias, because my dad would always bring me to the Toa Payoh Rojak stall back then when I was young, when he went to fetch my mum from Toa Payoh Hospital)
Hmmm on another note,I think the rojak stall at Blk 177 Toa Payoh is "missing". I ve gone past the stall a month back, but the uncle& auntie(and the Q) are gone
fry and grind their own peanuts... hmm.....
The rojak stall in Blk 177 had relocated to Toa Payoh Hub...in the foodcourt..
I am one of their "fans" who will queue up to 45mins for my fix...
Its a tad too sweet so I always ask for no sugar in my order....
This stall serves his rojak in 2 style, 1 is the sauce as a dip and the other is he will "fry" the ingredients with the sauce like what is available normally. I prefer the frying he does it with tai chi like skills and end result is perfect mixture of the sauce and ingredients. A true rojak.
For some really kick-ass spicy rojak, there's this little stall at a humble coffee shop at Blk 57 (I think) Marine Terrace, right next to the Marine Parade Police Station. The slivers of green mango & apple in it give it extra zing. Generous with crispy you tiao and yummy sauce.
I've tried Lau Hong Ser. To be brutally honest, I wouldn't go back even if there was no queue. His is a dry-tasting, almost bitter, annoyingly cloying rojak. But he is quite a character.
wow!!!! normally, i seldom eat rojak.. but when i see those pictures, i wish i could have a plate of tat immediately!!! i'm actually drooling over it!! =p
Hey Dawn ,
the 177 Toa Payoh Stall is now at the HDB Hub is it ?
AT the MRT Station / bus interchange area ?
Juzz, I actually wanted to have my rojak fried, but it was the stallowner who kept insisting that I should have it dry and dip.
Looks like HDB Hub is the next place to visit as well as marine terrace
Hi Mark,
the 177 rojak is located in the basement of Tao Payoh Hub.
There is an escalator from the bus interchange tht goes to the foodcourt.
actually, rojak only has 1 method - everything mixed together wif e sauce..
for e sauce on e side, it's more for e "peng gang" "side-dishes" like you yu, tau pok n you tiao.. i would presume tat besides ordering e uncle's rojak, most of us would order e "side-dishes" too, right?
i'm so glad tat his sauce is not "stinko" at all!! some rojak sauce can be really "stinko" n i really can't bring myself to go near it!
i tried it last night after work n it's delicious! i'm going back for more soon!! ;)
I am a fan of both the Toa Payoh Rojah at Old Airport Road and the grill and dip version at Lau Hong Ser...:)
I prefer Lau Hong Ser's to the Toa Payoh Rojak as Lau Hong Ser's "hae kor" got more kick.
this used to be THE best rojak in singapore.....10years ago... unfortunately, ever since it got so much media exposure and hype, and makansutra also came into the picture to make it one of the hawker legends.... standards have dropped.
or maybe i was unlucky the past few times i went to eat his rojak.
hint: to avoid the long wait and queue, take his name card and call in advance to order. he will oblige you when you arrive, and you cut waiting time down to 5min..
So anyone can tell me where in Old airport road is the rojak? Name of stall?
its so famous! Its the rojak stall with queuing system. walk around and u will find it.
another over-rated joint. I give it 2/5. I have had better rojak.
Then please share with us where is a good rojak.
The Toa payoh Blk 177 rojak was actually shifted to HDB hub foodcourt @ basement(beside Bodyshop in interchange). the new store at 177 is actually not bad too....I am actually looking for the blk 177 Laksa that was missing. Anyone idea?
