Aburiya: Japanese BBQ!
SCS Butter went back twice in a month to this restaurant and was raving about their marinated Wagyu Beef. For those of you who know him, this means that the place has got a certain Shui Zun (lit: water level ie standard) cos SCS really does like his food.
Tender slivers of Wagyu Beef and Pork Belly marinated in sweet Yakiniku Sauce and gently grilling over a charcoal fire is probably one of my favourite dining experiences. A slice of well marinated Wagyu Beef Karubi (shortrib) eaten with a mouthful of Japanese rice is one of those things that is actually quite simple, but extremely satisfying.
Needless to say, the beef here is wonderfully marinated and the quality of the beef is very good. However, when people say that a piece of Wagyu beef is "Melt in your mouth" they don't really mean that it is melt in your mouth like a piece of butter. Sure, when you chew on the beef, the fats do melt in your mouth, but the rest of the beef has got a chewy texture to it. The real beauty of Short Ribs is how the aroma of the beef lingers on the palate long after you swallow the tasty morsel. There's only one problem and that is that you never get enough! 4.5/5
If you really want something that is "Melt in your mouth" then you should try the Foie Gras. It is also marinated with Yakiniku Sauce but you sort of fry it in an aluminium bowl over the charcoal fire. Fantastically sinful! 4.5/5
Conclusion
The quality of the meat and the marinade here is very good. They keep the prices lower by offering smaller portions so you get to order a wider variety of meats. I have to agree with SCS that it is one of the best places to enjoy a casual Yakiniku.

Looks good, and judging by the way you described it..no doubt it tasted good too. But I bet its pricey eh?
水准 = Shui Zhun
so wads the price?
wow, cool, you finally made it down there. heh. this is definitely one of the top yakiniku places in town and one of my fav restaurants. unpretentious and very good.
i'd recommend going shio(plain ol salt) if you really want to enjoy the taste of the beef. you won't be disappointed because they serve very high quality meat indeed. i'd recommend getting the "normal" tenderloin, it's a fair bit cheaper than the wagyu, and it has an unbeatable beefy goodness to it.
Other things u might wanna try the next time u hit up this place is the bimbinba(sp?) and the spinach salad.
The bimbinba comes in a stone hotpot, is mixed at your table, and mmmm, it's just one of the best things u can have there, this coming from a person who usually dislikes korean food. The combination of sweet and savoury, and the crispy rice at the end is just so damn awesome. heh.
average damage per person ieat? :)
=x this one not cheap.. but the food is really good. been having special occassions dinner for a few years liao (once or twice a yr max) ..
to enjoy(just order whatever you fancy) probably a good $200 would be nice for 2px.
Hey such a coincidence that I did a writeup on Aburiya as well, amidst their Holland V outlet. I agree that the quality of meat they served is very good. The outlet in Holland Village also serves seafood - so you can get your grilled salmon. And another must try meat is the Jo Tan Shio, or the premium beef tongue... the texture is simply heavenly!
You can read it @

hmmm...
e tot of eating tongue = -_-"
Ya the salad & tongue is good too. Price really depends on what you order. Appx $100 per pax will bring you pretty near heaven already la.
Hi Dr Tay. We are librarians from NLB who look for interesting information to put on our ASK. We found that your food blog is informative and mentioned it here http://dl.nlb.gov.sg/ask/2008/01/food_food_food_1.html
Have a nice day
wah... leslie, congrats! =)
even national library is finding ur blog interesting!!
i'm sure some publishers will be knocking on ur door to publish a book soon! ;)
oh ya.. btw... more than 2 million hits liao! =)
p is right.. best way to eat their grilled meats is shio style - with rock salt and dash of lemon juice. then can really taste the meat, cos the yakiniku sauce etc tends to drown out the tate.
can try ordering with the rice cakes (cant remember the name). 1 - 2 pieces enoufh. grill it over the fire, until slightly charred. one bite of meat, one bite of rice... sends u to heaven.
also, eating at this place, has to be at a leisurely pace. cos the food is quite slow to come and then subsequenlty to cook, best way is to eat slowly, savor the meats, over good conversation with dinner companions..
but not cheap this place... for large appetities, need to spend abt $100 per head, as the portions in general is not large.
khim - if you dare to eat kway chap, where parts of the pig which waaste passes through is considered a delicacy.... the tongue doesn't sound that bad..
Tongue is really just muscle and fat. It's basically meat too! :)
rice cake = onigiri
wats really good there is the jo karubi...that ones a killer u really cant get enough of it...and for the adventurous they are one o the few places in singapore that serve yukku, a minced raw beef dish with an egg yolk inside..its quite good!
and the price range can go down to actually 40-50 bucks a person if you are not a big eater...
sumosumo,
i think it's been really ages since i last eat kway chap.. in fact, i seldom eat kwap chap..
come to think of it, eating pig intestines n beef tongue sound really gross, isn' it? *face turning pale*
Just heard from a friend living in Tokyo that he recently tried horse HEART sashimi..... Whats tongue and kuay chap?????
khim - the chinese, like the japanese, eats everything that moves with its back to the sky. waste not want not...
do u eat Uni? thats the gonnards of the sea urchin, both male and female...
wait till u try codfish sperm at the japanese restaurants..
horse heart sashimi?!! eeeekkkkkssss...
i tried uni but i dun like it.. i will not try it at all, dun worry! ;)
anything suspicious - i wun eat!! hehe
Horse heart. Common, we chinese devour chicken heart, pig's brain, turtle paw right here in Singapore. You can also get the male private parts of the cow at Adam Rd FC.
khim - everything must try at least once. thereafter u make the choice whether to try it ever again or not.. =))
mutton brain, fish stomach, pigs stomach lining, bone marrow, pigs trotters, ox tongue..... all protein!
Any Jap Food worth a try! It's my fav. But looks like this year will be very tight for me!
Cheers...
Anyone tried Tatsuka before...if I get the name right, I tried it once with my family...brought them there as it was my parents' anniversary...its directly opposite paragon shopping ctr taxi stand...the beef wasssssssssssssssss sooooooooooooooo superb (am i being too excited here..haa) and my mum had the eel, another wonderful dish! And those who pride themselves as wasabi lover...trust me their wasabi is one of the freshest i have ever tried! But be prepared to pay for an average of $150-$200 p/pax...worth the try but too many visits will just kill anyone's pocket.. =)
I think this place is not as good as Gyu Kaku.
The beef here is fantastic! My fav is the shortribs. Didn't go for the wagyu cut cos the prime is good enough for me. The kimchi is a pleasant surprise. I love the tare sauce although the shio (salt & pepper) is equally good if not better cos you can then have the real taste of the meat. Price is a bit high - the bill for 3 of us came to $200+ but well worth the money. Definitely coming back.
PS: Never eaten so much beef in one meal....... Really! Shiok!
Sharon
eee.. sumosumo.. e moment i read e "mutton's brain" sentence, i feel sick lei.. cannot lar.. i dun think i can stomach things like brains, tongue, reproduction organs, etc..
however, i do luv stomaches! stomaches like pig, goat n cow! ;)
Damien - the place is called tatsuya. its one of the most overrated japanese restaturants in sg in my opinion. they are better known for their sushi. but the chef has a reputation for overcharging. try Tomo Fine Dining @ marina square, #02-03 for sushi or omakase. chef thomas is one of the best. this may be offtopic, being a beef thread, but thought i did mention it.
khim - ok ok.. mutton brain dont do it for me either. but stomach isn't much better than the tongue or brains....
i guess everyone has his/her own likes! ;)
I would recommend beef lovers to try the Wagyu at Mezzanine! It's char-grilled to perfection and melts in the mouth. It's served with butter sauce which makes it even more sinful. yumyum...
if u were to visit aburiya for the beef, i would definitely recommend u the wagyu jo karubi and and wagyu ribeye. The wagyu ribeye is the best! when u grilled it slowly half raw and place it in ur mouth, it has this milky taste and the texture is like chewing gum. soft and sweet. 2 Thumbs up!!
