Beach Road Scissor Cut Curry Rice: Sticky, Gooey, Goodness
I would bet that if you brought an Ang Moh friend to eat this Hainanese Curry Rice, he would think you were pulling a quick one on him. It's a plate of rice topped with an unthinkable mixture of gooey chicken curry, braised pork and slimy soft cabbage gravy. If you had never eaten this before, you'd probably be wondering how something that looks like pig's swill could even taste good.
But if you had just finished a 20km road march and had nothing else to eat but dry biscuits and water, this stuff will definitely hit the G-spot.
I also cannot imagine how you can mix curry with lor (braising sauce), but man the concoction sure tastes good. And that is not all, the texture of the gravy is like that of Tau Suan. It's full of corn starch, so it's like eating glue. But when you are famished, that bolus of rice and gravy slides down the oesophagus like engine oil on pistons. It's the quick and tasty way to satisfy your hunger pangs.
Best of all, you can eat everything with just a spoon since they cut up the meat for you with a traditional pair of scissors (don't know where to get these nowadays). Effortless, tasty and simply damn shiok. 4.5/5
Conclusion
Know any Ang Mohs who actually like this stuff?

I used to frequent the coffee shop while I was still working in Concourse. But I always ordered the fish beehoon from another store, it was great! The line for the curry rice was painfully long and like you mentioned, the food doesn't look appetizing....Maybe I will give them a try when I am home for CNY. Thanks for the review.I get many makan ideas from your blog.
at least this Angmoh does...
This is my family's all time favorite ! My dad, my uncles..all of them love it. Perhaps it has got to do with the fact that our old house was around the beach road area in the 1960s-1980s? Anyways, it tastes great..: )
Eeewwww too gooey for me....Can blog the mutton soup just across the road?
It's the absolute best! I was introduced to this during army days as well, and since then, I've brought all my good pals there at least once. As always, I tell them "it looks terrible, but once you try it, you'll fall in love with it!". What a surprise to read about it here! =D~ Head on down to Lau Di Fang!
They have a stall at the Kopitiam foodcourt here in Novena Square. But I don't think they taste anything like the original stall.
If you are those treating food as a vision sensory experience, please stop reading my comments as the food that this stall offer ranks really low if not one of the worse food presentation I can ever get.
This curry rice is the modified version of Hainanese Curry rice, nevertheless still get my stamp of approval. The first time one looks at it, the gravy over the rice really reminds someone of puke when one had too much to drink or during food poisoning albeit in a presentable colour. But I cud bet with you if you were to have a blind taste test. It would easily pass most discern foodies with flying colours. Convincing your eyes that the food actually taste good, that is something I can't help. Anyone on a low carb diet should avoid this also as its a double whammy of rice and starch used for the gooey gravy.
As far as any ang mos who tried, there is but its more the exception rather than the few and usually they would just "tar pao" (take away) as this is a total table etiquette nightmare of communal eating.
Nuff said, take the leap of faith and you won't be disappointed. One can also try without the gravy over the rice and would probably taste like any other mixed vegetable rice.
tried it.. sorry.. not my cup of tea.
drowning everyihtng in the gooey gravy, makes everything taste the same. u dont even knw waht u are eating....
hey, check out the duck rice stall at the other corner just directly opposite of this stall also along kitchener/jalan besar.

My frist taste was like yuk!But when taste again I do like this stall version than any stall I have tried and eaten a number of times and do like it but not much dishes to choose from.
The duck rice stall have tried their char siew and roasted pork it's kind olden time taste with a simple dark sauce on top of the rice, it's very nice.
I LOVE THIS!
boyfriend brought me there when we just started "paktor" and i thought to myself, ew, so gross, all sloppy and gooey... then i took my first bite...
YUMMY!!!
Going to eat tomorrow, hehe!
it tasted better last time. one guy manning the stall had six fingers on one hand. now the quality drop imo.
Food here looks good! The only reason didn't try that day "Tummy full to the fullest w/Pizza". Hmmm... yummy but with lots and lots of starch! Ladies, watch-out!
just had it! as good as ever, yum! always cautious when people say "last time better" because sometimes it's just the tastebuds getting jaded! delicious!
three years of delicious curry rice from there and counting! =9~
We used to have it quite often. It's good... but not good enough for my family and I to put up with the attitude from the guy scooping the stuff onto the plate.
We paused 3 seconds to consider what else to have and were told to hurry (0% politeness shown) and shown the black face. When my dad commented that he could have 'just say nicely', we were told that we can bring our business somewhere else if we're 'buay song'.
And we did. Never returned back to this shop again after that day.
goodness..these pics make me hungry.
ifatfat - ur right abt the attitude!
I love lots of gravy.. on my rice.. ;)
what a sticky rice Nazi?
10-15yrs back when i was in sec sch...my dad will go and queue before the stall opens in the evening...so our family had this at least 2-3 times per week for dinner....sinful but great...
ahhhhhhh I know this one...its near to the WP HQ and I ever went once, it was great although it looks sick!
Great Recommendation! Thumbs up!
heyz.. i think there's a stall with a smiliar name at redhill hawker too. also, there's a nice hainanese curry rice stall at Henderson too which is also quite similar... but i haven try this one yet! =)
Honestly, I didn't quite like it... the gravy was way too starchy - especially when I had just had the curry chicken rice from Portsdown road the day before..
Oh, please let us know the address of the stall!
