Yu Sheng Recommendations
One reader wrote in to ask if I could review and recommend Yu Sheng since CNY is just round the corner. The fact is I don't really have a favourite Yu Sheng place to recommend. But I am sure you all have so why don't you write in to recommend your favourite places?
While on this topic, I would just like to let you know that our friends at Vittles would like to extend a 10% discount for all ieatishootipost readers for their Lunar New Year's special East-meet-West set menu (available from 6 Feb to 21 Feb) as well as our Prosperity Fresh Raw Salmon Yusheng (available from 1 Feb to 21 Feb). All you have to do is to let them know that you are readers of this blog. In addition to giving you the discount, 5% of the sales proceeds will be donated to Andrew and Grace home.
You may want to check out their blog for more details at www.vittles-sg.blogspot.com

Last year, I had 'Yu Sheng' at Club Chinois, Orchard Parade Hotel. This outlet belongs to Tung Lok Group. Their 'Yu sheng' had Pomelo and some other fruits added to it. It was very good and tasted refreshing. It is excellent compared to the tons of other 'Yu sheng' which I have tasted during CNY. Another dish worth trying is their Shark's Cartilage soup. It is yummy!
My favourite Yu Sheng is definitely at Lai Wah Restaurant located at Bendemeer Road & they are the one that invented this dish. Back in the 90's there was one at Kitchener Road called "飘记" but there are no longer operating.
Next on the list is Sin Leong Restaurant, but don't know whether they are still in operation. Understand from my parents, the owner of Lai Wah, Sin Leong & two more chef invented this dish back in the 50's.
My family and I always have Yu Sheng from Min Jiang restaurant (Goodwood Park Hotel) and Wee Nam Kee Chicken rice outlet at Novena.
All Nice!
Love the crackers especially. Haha
try Golden Crown Restaurant..my regular go to for the last 10 years or so....
I would recommend the teochew-style Yu Sheng at Mong Hing Teochew Restaurant(Key Point, Beach Road)
my family always go to beng hiang there on the seventh day of cny for the yusheng. it's not particularly excellent, but a must try is their roast piglet and fish maw soup.
it's always been a great cny dinner their in the rowdy atmosphere... haha~
i went to try the yu sheng at Vittles, it's ultra yummy! plus they were so generous with the salmon!
Hi meng, Sin leong is now renamed as Roland Restaurant. At Marine Parade. U can still find their famous Chilli Crab there. :)
hi tiny m,
Roland restaurant is not related to sin leong. The owner of sin leong restaurant is Mr. Sin Leong himself & they are purely cantonese & not teochew.
But thank anyway, will go try their chilli crab.
Cheers!
The owner of Roland Rest is nephew of Sin Leong Rest owner.
my yu sheng this year was bought from my own stall.... we were selling fresh greens yu sheng with either fresh (not frozen) salmon sashimi or abalone at my japanese stall " rice bowl don buri @ east coast rd". my customers all loved it because it was different from the normal yu sheng where they used preserved veggies.. ours was all fresh.. and colourful (natural colour of course)i should have came in earlier to introduce my CNY special.. but was too busy shredding veggies.. :P although the seson is almost over.. if anyone is interested maybe you can get my contact thru Dr Tay.. do u still have my number?? :)
Jessie, why don't you leave your contact number here and I will add it to your stall address on the blog.
Hi Meng, about the founder of Yu Sheng, here is some history: In the mid 60's, Master Chef Hooi Kok Wai, together with the other three "Heavenly Kings", namely the late Mr. Tham Mui Kai, Mr. Sin Leong, Mr. Lau Yoke Pui, they created the "Lunar New Year Raw Fish", which now becomes a culinary culture in Singapore. The restaurant - Dragon Phoenix, is at #06-00 Novotel Clarke Quay Singapore (Liang Court). Do check out the website http://www.dragonphoenix.com.sg/home/

Meng mentioned the Yu Sheng at Lai Wah Restaurant. I couldn't agree more. What i like about the Yu Sheng is that its still the same old traditional ones that its hard to get now. And the taste is exquisite!!! And it is still open at 44 Bendemeer Rd. Last day for Yu Sheng 2009 is on 9th Feb 09 (15 Day of CNY. The restaurant also serve fabulous Cantonese food. Highly recommended by many even MakanSutra. Go and see for yourselves. Website: www.laiwahrestaurant.com
