Mr Tea: Invasion of the Foreign Hawkers!
Teh Tarik 80 cents, Ginger Masala Tea $1.20 Tall Cup
You know what I see in my crystal ball?
I see food courts becoming more international with more homegrown franchises selling international cuisine. The day will come when you will walk into a hawker centre and not be able to find your Chicken Rice. Instead, you will see cuisines from all round the world. Just look at the number of "upmarket" stalls which have already set up in hawker centres/food courts selling stuff like Belgian Waffles, Muffins and lately even French Crepes. It looks like one day our hawker centres will no longer be a showcase of local cuisine but a global gastronomic playground.
Not only will we be eating foreign cuisines made by locals, we will be seeing foreign franchises in our local hawker centres and food courts selling international cuisine. It is already happening now and the invasion is inevitable. Just last week, liverpool and I were sampling hamburgers from a chain originating from the Philippines called Hotshots burgers. These guys are not simply coming to set up one stall but a whole chain of stalls! J-Co, a donut chain from Indonesia has also set up shop here recently, competing with local brands for a bite of the doughnut ring. The interesting trend is not that foreign companies are setting up shop here, but that they are not selling products indigenous to their own countries anymore. It may not be surprising if one day, an Indonesian Chilli Crab chain arrives in Singapore to compete with Singaporeans at our own game. Hey, we are doing it ourselves by selling Delifrance products to the French!
Consider Mr Tea for instance. When liverpool and I took our first sip of the Tea, I could see the apprehension in his eyes. Now, you all know that liverpool owns a cafe and makes hundreds of cups of Teh C everyday. To see his reaction at the first sip of the Teh Tarik was a sight to behold. The Teh Tarik was one notch better than anything we have tasted locally plus it was cheap! At 80 cents for a large cup (at least twice the volume of Killiney Teh C), this Teh Tarik delivers the highest Ommmph per dollar of any Teh Tarik in Singapore!
Given that we are living in a free market economy, that simply means that we are going to see more Mr Tea joints opening up and more local Kopi and Teh joints closing down. In a way, it is good. At least it will wake the local giants like Killiney and Ya Kun up from their complacent slumber. Yes, you guys might be able to thumb down the local competition and push up your prices, but you are not going to be able to match a competitor like Mr Tea who is delivering a tastier cup of tea and selling to Singaporeans twice the amount of tea at almost half the price! If a foreign company can charge half the price for a cup of tea, it simply means that our local guys charging us too much.
Drinking Mr Tea was a holy grail experience. The Teh Tarik is perfectly balanced, smooth, fragrant with a more than adequate tea taste without leaving that waxy tannin aftertaste. We tried the ginger masala tea and it was just as unforgettable. The way the tastey zing of the ginger cuts through the creaminess of the tea felt like suddenly being able hear stereo sound in a mono recording. It was a sensation I have yet to experience in any of our local Sarabat Stalls. 4.75/5
The only real downside I can say is that they all come in the paper cup. It would be almost perfect in a proper cup!
Conclusion
Best cup of Teh Tarik I have tasted. Our local Teh Terik players had better pull up their socks because I won't be the first one to switch over to the other side!

eh I don't make hundreds of cups of Teh C a day (more likely 50 cups) hehe, I wouldn't mind that kind of volume though...I trust the IRAS will be reading my reply... a really good cup of tea!
I've been thinking alot about Mr Tea lately and I haven't even tasted it. When I was having lunch at Market Street last week, I saw a constant stream of people waiting in line for their cuppa tea. I was really impressed and curious that a small stall could generate so much buzz. I kept telling my friends you DON'T need a big business plan to make money.
Wow! I've got to give that a try when I get back! :)
Where are you jo? They are a chain and have shops in New York, Dublin, Dubai, London! Reminds me of a textbook!
seems like the one at smu is pretty poor, then.. figures.
Oh no, I was hoping that the Tea was standard across all the stalls. I can only attest to the one I had at Market Street on the day I sampled it then. I really hope it wasn't a one hit wonder!
hello C:
i'm from smu, and we have been boycotting the branch in our school,
as the service is horrible and slow,
and they often screw up our orders in the morning.
LOL :p
Hi, i beg to differ i am actually from one of the offices in the smu area. The Mr Tea outlet at smu branch has improved considerably. I found out from the manager at smu that the reason for the intial drop was because there was a major change in staff which explained the delays but now that is all over. You should really consider going back to them and trying their tea you will be amazed. I have been visiting Mr Tea at SMU for the past 1 year and i can tell you that their tea is the best in Singapore. Seriously, you are not going to try better tea anywhere else. Go ahead and try the tea at Mr Tea at SMU. You will notice the difference :)
Phew! That is good to know.
yea, i beg to differ. The Mr Tea at SMU is really horrible. Poor service rate and they always screw up orders. You tell them 'less sweet', they give u 'extra sweet'! wth. try it n you will regret!
Still sipping the Ginger Masala Tea. Very good!
Dude, i am a student from the Business faculty. Had tea at the Mr Tea SMU branch earlier. It's as good as ever. Which faculty are you from? You sound like you have something personal against the outlet as me and my pals from the Biz faculty often have the teh tarik and ginger tea here without any problems :)It's really good. Seriously you should reconsider.
What's with all the anonymity? Put down an identity so we can have a better sense of how many's for and how many agst.
I-eat, how about going to SMU to try out their Mr.Tea and so settle this dispute?
ex-SMU student here, graduated about 4 months ago - was drinking tea from the smu branch since the beginning coz it was the closest place for a tea break between classes (was from the social science faculty, where they used to be). was surprised to see the recommendation for mr tea, but then maybe the market street branch is different. never did like the tea at mr tea at all.. dunno, the milk tastes funny and the tea was pretty bad. just prefer the taste of regular teh tarik in a kopitiam anywhere (or the taste of a real roadside chai in india.) maybe the one in market street is much better. i hope.
If that is the case then it is very sad because as a chain of stalls, each one should be serving tea of the same standard.
I work near the Market St stall and it is so popular nowdays that the waiting time is sometimes up to 15mins!! Now I try to go at "off peak" hours to get my "fix" of lovely teh. My gripe is that the set up of the place doesnt look too efficient and that slows things down.
Sorry to go off topic (and double apologies if it has been reviewed/discussed before), but has anyone been down to the New Harbour Cafe on Tanjong Pagar Road and sampled the Crispy Hainanese Pork?! Its absolutely amazing.... Not the healthiest option, but worth an occasional treat!
Yes heard they also have good char siew
Oh noooo ! the cat is out of the bag and my favorite outlet is going to have even longer lines ; > I'm a Mr Tea regular from SMU days and still go back there 3 or 4 times a week at the good old SMU branch . The tea is so good its addictive ,it should be a crime ; > The ginger tea is really potent! actually time for my fix now ; >
read the comments....could not resist....had to try it ....the tea at SMU is not just good.....its great...what do they put in to it ...my god .
I am so glad that our local makan joints will hv to wake up fm their "complacent slumber" as u so nicely put it coz each time I visit, (other than the nice places u recommend), the rest are just out for the kill. Over-charging for Rubbish! And that really pisses me off.
At last! Someone who feels the same way I do about paying $1 for a cup of watered down tea without enough carnation milk!
Heyyy...I love reading your blog but havent commented till now.
Well I'm from SMU. Well would just like to point out that Mr Tea isn't a foreign chain- its an local as they get. My friend's brother actually started it in SMU and well...they are local indians. Those ads are actually quite leading.
As for the drinks...they used to serve THE best drinks in SMU but right now their standards have really gone down becoz they changed the people who used to make the tea. Sadly it seems that the original tea makers went to international plaza.
So yepp...thats my 2 bits abt Mr Tea :)
You got to be kidding!
Check their website:
http://www.tea-mr.com/
According to them, their most recent location is Singapore after setting up stores all round the world. The way they are opened to franchising and all really looks like they are quite big and unlike a one stall local set up. I would really like to talk to your friend and get to the bottom of this!
Errmmm, got kopi or not?
Mumbai Nah!!! MUMBAI!
Its too sweet and milky for my liking. I've been there a few times with my colleagues and we always complain that they dont pay attention to our orders. The stall is always busy coz there are very few kopi/teh outlets to cater to the office lunch crowd, not that its all that good lah. :[
ah...maybe I should set up a stall at Shenton Way then... :)
Hi leslie no offense but I think it is quite unfair to compare killiney, ya kun and mr.tea. Killiney and ya kun both specialises in coffee not tea. Also, the last time i checked, I think the price for a cup of coffee at Killiney is around 70-80cents so it is quite inexpensive.
Sorry to digress but I do agree with the proliferation of franchises standards at the outlets may have dropped but maybe you should pay a visit to the original Killiney outlet at Somerset. I go there after my early morning runs and the coffee there is quite good. The runny eggs there are also a must-try and beats Ya Kun's hands-down anytime.
I paid $1.30 for a cup of Teh C at Killiney Marina Centre last Sunday. I ended up having to buy 2 cups because it was not enough. I paid $0.80 for a tall cup of Teh Tarik at Mr Teh a few days before that,I bought 2 cups because even though there was enough, I just wanted some more.
Hence the comparison.
i'm from SMU as well. From the comments above, I'm sure all of you realise that the standard of Mr Tea SMU varies from time to time.
Consistency is an issue. They do screw up orders because they have too many similar items on their menu. please check.
yup...the original Killiney is still the place to go for my toasts, tea, nasi lemak, french toast...
Not that I'm saying it isn't (since I've never eaten at either), but if the standard is consistent across locations, then we could possibly have your so called "Presidential" Teh Tarik almost round the clock. The vendor may be less of an issue here compared to say Hokkien Mee, but I'm sure it still makes a difference.
Killiney and Ya Kun are not the only ones to over-price their beverages. If you think about it, most kopitiams as well, the rising cost of raw materials notwithstanding.
I could not help but comment on what i have been reading. I have been working in the smu area for 3 years now. All i can say is that Mr Tea SMU gives the best value for money in that area and their quality of tea is very good. Seriously, i can have two cups of either delicious ginger tea or teh tarik at Mr Tea SMU for the price of 1 lousy tea at the kopitiam across smu. This is not forgetting that the kopitiam cup is much smaller than Mr Tea SMU. So i don't understand what is the complain or gripes about, we should be thankful that in this era of rising inflation at least we still can get good delicious tea at just 80 cents. Singaporeans should really stop complaining and be thankful.
i am student from smu.i just tried the ginger masala tea.it is fantastic and marvelous.furthermore it is damn cheap.
hey ms anonymous why don't you go and try the tea again and change your views.
Just spoke with the manager from the Market Street outlet.
Mr Tea is indeed a chain from India. The manager herself was in charge of the Delhi branch before being posted here. The owners of the franchise are probably Singaporeans.
She said that they process each order when it comes in and they have to do quite a lot everyday so mistakes do occur.
Still thinking about the Tea, too bad it is so far away!
I just tried it at Market street, had to wait 15 minutes for my drink, which is quite long as i made the order at 2:15pm! Anyway, it's rather creamy and nice, but waaaaaaaaaaay too sweet for my tastebuds. I still swear by the tea tarik at Adam Road Hawker, Taj Mahal (I think). Go taste it if you've not!
've tasted it and glad to drink
I have tried the Taj Mahal tea and i am sure ieat has as well and all i can say is that Taj Mahal tea is the worst tea i have ever tasted. Their teh tarik is diluted and their ginger tea is even worse. I am really surpirsed you are recommending them as i good easily tell you a dozen places far better. Also, Taj Mahal is not even half as good as Mr Tea.
iEat you have reviewed them before perhaps you can elighten the rest of us just how good they are.
Hey, well i could try to get my friend to contact you...my mum even knows the family and even my dad mentioned sometime back how so-so has opened his own tea place in smu lol...i think most of us at SMU noe that it isnt really a foreign stall...just errr amusing advertising.
I must say tho...despite the bad service...their Coco Loco is still good...though i havent gone back in come time because of the service n dropping standards.
Globalisation had existed as long as human lived. It had transformed out society as long as human ever lived. It didnt just happened dude.
Pizza originates from china and tikka masala originates from uk. your laksa is a cross product of thai malaysian food.
In the past they used to bring their indigenous food over and modified it to suit the local needs. Now they are coming over to sell food from other countries. This is the point I was trying to make.
tried the tea there..its really good ! Chatted with the friendly manager at the Market Street Outlet and its quite obvious that the anonymous poster who claims to know the family behind the chain is on an ego trip or trying to discredit them. I'll bet his/her next post is going to say "lost my friends number " or " can't contact her anymore " . Welcome to the age of globalisation and take competition on the chin instead of embarking on smear campaigns .
I don't think you can ever bring a food to somewhere without a consideration for local's taste bud. Macdonalds had differemt menu all over the world and the same goes for KFC.
Have you tried kebab in Singapore. Let me tell you even so called "authentic" kebabs sold by middle easy people are nothing too near to the original kebabs.
If you go into a market trying to sell something without a consideration for the culture of the people, then it is not going to work. Everything that comes into Singapore are modified into Singapore's culture as far as possible. Have you heard of Laksa spagetti?
Oh yes of course the food will come, but how spicy or how sweet, it will be modified to suit the local because you are in business for money right? You are not some kind of non profit oraganisation here to introduce your country's delight right? so of course you have to make sensible choices and tune it to local flavour.
There is this penyet chicken rice which came from indonesia. It wasnt here like 10 years ago but now you can see it everywhere but let me tell you, the real penyet chicken in indonesia taste nothing like those you can find in Singapore. Just like if you go to L0ondon, you will not ba able to find food that taste the same back in hongkong, not if they want to do business with the british. The british do not eat spicy stuff. So what kind of audience do you want to reach out? I think it would be silly for a turkish to come here to attrack turkish customers, to penetrate the singapore market, you need to sell to singaporean and in order to do so, you have to adjust to the singapore's taste.
as far as i know, the people behind the counter at the smu outlet are nepalese - the quality particularly suffers when the nepalese guy isn't around. smu students have been boycotting to an extent because of poor service and inconsistent quality. compared to what it was when it was at its previous location at the economics school, this stall has smaller portions (with more ice - so it looks the same), significantly poorer service, inconsistent quality, as well as higher prices (up about 20 cents for ice milo, for example..) that said, it is still the best drinks stall in the area, but also partially because the other options are so poor.
I am a student at smu, and I am proud to say that I have successfully boycotted the Mr Tea at smu for a full semester.
What they say is really true about it. It is dirty (there are flies, even inside the air-conditioned area) , orders are often wrong, prices jacked-up, service is without a smile and more often then not, rude, quality has dropped since it moved from the economics school to the social science school.
In fact, I even once had a theory that they added tiles to their floors only after a year or so to avoid mopping it, showing how lazy they are.
Enough of just what I think, now would be a good time to read about the horrors of Mr Tea at SMU.
Read it at:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19648098080
Interesting that most of the complaints are about the SMU branch. I wonder if there are different frachisees at the different branches? Sometime that happens and a particular franchisee is not managing their frachise properly. One of the disadvantages of franchising.
Oh, cockroach in the Tea? Wait till NEA finds out!
Hey i am a student from school of info.Just went down for my favourite tea, great as usual. The outlet is crowded even during school holidays with both students and office people. It is quite obvious that there is a group of students with grudges against them for reasons best known to themselves.Or are you just the competitor from School of Economics, taking cheap shots at them.Anyways looks like that they are letting their great tea to do the talking.
Hey i heard le papillon had some issues man something to do with their food. Does anyone know?
I also heard man. Is it true. Apprently food quality and their closure is something to do with it.
Really or not. It's that why i heard le papillon closing down? But their food not bad. I think they got issues man. Any of you guys know about this. I used to go there often
its such a pity that a varying standard at the smu outlet can still become some's fav choice. however, value-wise in terms of volume, I would say that mr. tea is tops amongst the substandard beverages selling at the other schools. the outlet seems to be sustaining with lotsa of office ppl patronising during lunch hours. I wouldnt want to drink so much tea over dere for fear of diabettes man. those who love it, pls watch ur sugar level at ur own discretion. cheers!
yes i heard that papillon is closing down but not sure if the information is true.
what is it about papillon.I thought they are actually quite good.
nice read. i think competition is good though for the start, a lot of the local hawkers/ cafe owners will be a lil bit red-eye.
but eventually, it will make this place a even more food haven.
*as for the chicken rice, i think it will remain as long as singaporeans demand... but may never taste the same if done by a foreigner. but u never know, like the teh, they may do one up for the chicken rice as well! :)
its interesting to read the different opinions regarding mr.tea C:
well, after drinking so much tea from mr.tea it comes out through my nose, the tea which tasted great initially made me wonder: would you still call a warm cup of great tasting beverage tea, even though the essence of what tea seems to be isnt there? will it do justice to all those old-school teas out there, if you compare carnation milk with concentrated carnation milk? (i.e old school tea with mr.tea)
thats what i've concluded from the past 2 sems of tea gulping C:
The quality of Mr Tea has really dropped since it first started 3 years ago under the school of economics. I use to be a regular, 2 cups a day. Now I am a convert of the coffee stall under the school of accountancy. Cheaper and better.
According to the manager of Mr Tea at Market street, the franchise has only been in Singapore quite recently. So I am not sure what is the story with the SMU branch
hmmm just went down today to try the teh tarik at SMU, wonder what all the anonymous posters are complaining about, for 80 cents a cup, its better than a lot of kopi tiams...
I had tasted the teh tarik at both SMU and Market Street. SMU one is not fantastic but i would say still acceptable. And i'm very surprise that you strongly recommended the one at market street becoz it's horrible, the tea (ice one) is so diluted and always too sweet (maybe coz the owner is from india). Or perhaps the one u tried is hot one instead of ice one. I tried a hot teh cino before and it's the worst tea i have ever had, it's simply full of condense milk and i took 1 sip and totally can't stand it. I sent it back and told them to dilute it but it was still the same. My colleague tasted it and they too agreed that it was too sweet and horrible. I love sweet stuff and love milk tea also, sad to say market street is really not up to standard. Not sure if their standard is inconsistent or only to certain kind of tea, since the queue is quite long.
Anyway, I have given up on the Mr Tea at market street after a few times. I would rather walk further down to Far East Sq for Mr Teh Tarik. Maybe you could try that out and comment the diff.
haven't tried Mr Tea iced drinks, I usually have the Iced Almond susu from Mr Teh Tarik :)
karen, ieat blogged abt mr. teh tarik before:
http://ieatishootipost.sg/2007/06/mr-teh-tarik-i-wonder-what-tarik-does.html
i find mr. teh tarik too sweet already.. haven't got e chance to try mr. tea yet.. will compare.. anyway, if u dun like tea which is too sweet, u can try good morning nanyang cafe at chinatown point level 3 or ya kun?
liverpool owns good morning nanyang cafe.. =)
WOW~ Again, I am amazed at the numerous comments on tea alone. I'm not a tea person so I do not have high standards for it other than the fact the I do not like it "siew dai".
It's tough for consistencies unless the management if there is one controls specifically what things like siew dai, ga dai etc means. Some places put so much sugar I need to tell them siew siew dai etc... you get the picture. For the ones who are so unhappy abt forking 80 cents a cup, I truly wonder does this mean they never step into StarBucks and the likes for a cuppa of Chai Latte??? BOY, that would have generated 1000s of comments.
However on having crockroach in the drinks etc, shouldn't the outlet be already ordered to close down? and from the posts here and some facebook comments we are not just talking abt 1 case - I just find this a lil hard to believe and far fetched.
I shall too like liverpool find one day to JUST to go try their tea heh.
Sidetrack a lil to Killiney, I go there really often enough so I guess I can perhaps comment a lil abt their consistencies. The Kopi O is now 90cents for a very small cup. Yes, it's really so lil....
I always have their coffee around 3 to 4pm and it's only lately I started having them in the mornings too. And I must say I think the coffee taste better in da mornings. I really can't agree with their eggs though - Ya Kun and Wa Jiao truly top in their eggs - every outlet I have been to serves the HUGE runny eggs in the same consistencies, Killiney does not even in the main branch itself. Cuz likewise they have people on shifts. The good thing is that their servers are mostly malaysian young chaps whom I assume from their accent are friendly and pretty efficient. However Killiney is almost like a cult - you see people driving from all over making detour for a stopover coffee before heading to work. Even Chow Yun Fatt went there TWICE when he was in town for a week to promote The Curse of the Golden Flower
anyone can tell me e exactly location of mr. tea? wanted to try it just now.. but walked round market street twice but can't find e place & dun see anywhere wif a queue at all.. thanks!
its on the ground floor, walk into the centre building of the Market Street carpark :)
me toooo!! I had to go to ORQ for a meeting this morning and I deliberately got there earlier to try to try Mr Tea! And like Khim I couldn't find it at all.... :(
and isn't Market Street only that 1 street? Dang.....
u mean the ground floor or the market street FC building right? That one I can only see Killiney leh? so must be at further in I guess?
here you go khim, jems... :)
http://www.rednano.sg/sfe/map.action?querystring=market+street&zipcode=048945&mapi=1&offset=0
hi liverpool
thanks for letting me know! =)
thanks to tag for letting me know the directions too! =)
no problemo, if you know where Rogues is...same building...
ya, i know where Rogues is.. even walked past Rogues twice.. but dunno have to go inside e building.. hehe.. will be going down to try later! =)
i've finally managed to try mr. tea!! just same back 10 mins ago.. boy! at tis time, there's still quite a lot of people lei.. around 4 people in front of me queueing to order & a few more waiting for their orders.. (they have a numbering system!)
tried teh tarik. but e tea was too sweet for me & i dun taste any tea at all.. though it's really super value for $$$..
i still prefer ya kun (depending on who's making e tea) or liverpool's cafe anytime.. their sweetness & tea taste is just rite.. =)
Hi Khim... that's what i meant.. It's like Mr Milk more than Mr Tea, though Mr Teh Tarik is sweet, but at least i can taste tea.
My colleague says even if he told them siew tai... it's still too sweet.
Was down at the market street outlet and i have to say it was an excellent cup of tea with the right taste of tea and a perfect belnd of sweetness and milk. You can cleary tell they use premium top notch tea. Used to drink at Mr Teh Tarik and to be frank comapring them to Mr Tea is ridiculous . Mr Teh Tarik serves horrid bitter tasting tea which is really sweet for a more expansive price. I really suspect the way Karen is going on about it she must be from Mr Teh Tarik. For goodness sake stop comparing your local srabat stall with a premium tea joint. These guys are obviously in the Starbucks category and boy do they deliver !
Ok said my piece ; > Mysterious bloggers coming on and obviously trying to pitch thier own joints without shame always get my goat.serve a better tea Karen and we will be glad to go over to Mr Teh Tarik !
eddy, seems to me u r working for mr. tea instead!!
e tea is too sweet for me to tell whether "premium top notch tea" is used or not..
but i do agree tat mr. teh tarik is charging a cuppa super sweet tea for a high price! they even have to charge 10cents for their hot drinks, but not cold drink??
but between mr. tea & mr. teh tarik, mr. teh tarik has sweeter, stronger tea compared to mr. tea..
for me, i make my tea wif 3 packs of Dilma tea bags.. i like my tea strong yet not bitter..
& no, i dun work at mr. teh tarik, ya kun, nanyang cafe or any coffee joints or whatsoever hor..
i'm going to mr. tea to try e masala tea to confirm whether it's a one-off incident or it's too sweet & no tea taste/smell for my liking..
hmmm just had Mr Tea's ice teh tarik special today, $1.30...nice sweet and gao...must be something wrong with my taste buds... :)
Nothing wrong with your tastebuds. All the really good stuff have got detractors. Its is the middle of the road stuff that no one really bothers.
I guess one must learn to respect others' comments, opinions are subjective and Eddy you have no right to judge me just becoz you don't agree with my comments. And so everyone here who support Mr Tea must be from Mr Tea? LOL. And what kind of comparison you are trying to use for Starbucks - which is prob better for coffee not tea. Go ahead and make your comments but don't make all kind of stupid personal attack here.
Based on all the comments perhaps Mr Tea quality is inconsistent. Whatever the case, Mr Tea is not my cup of tea.
I disgree with Karen on the inconsistency part as both ieat and liverpool and many others have tried on quite a few occasions and they found it good. As a matter of fact, i have been going to Mr Tea for nearly a year now and all i can say is that it is the best value for money with a really good tea to go with.
As for Mr Teh Tarik, if your main gripe is inconsistency then i am surprised you frequent Mr Teh Tarik because their tea varies and their taste differs (sometimes too sweet and sometimes so bitter) throughout the day :). You should stick to Starbucks or TCC as they use a machine to do it :)
liverpool, there's nothing wrong wif ur tastebud lar!!
it's e inconsistency.. today i tried e masala tea & got teh tarik for my 2 colleagues, took a mouth of teh tarik from them & found out tat today, e tea is stronger (i can taste e tea) & it's not so sweet..
so next time, i'll feedback to e manager there.. =)
their masala tea is not bad.. tag recommended me!
thanks tag! ;)
finally tried Mr Tea. Went to the SMU outlet today and I must say I was very satisfied with it~ I ordered mine - teh si with little bit sugar after reading all the comments that they tend to be too heavy in adding sugar even if you say less sugar. It came out perrrfect. The tea tasted really smooth and nice. It was such a HUGE cup at 90 cents - what more can I say? Wish there's an outlet near my office man.
May i know where mr tea is located in SMU?
And also Market Street? I walked the whole of Market Street but just couldnt find it.
http://www.smu.edu.sg/leasing/tenants/index.asp
here you go! :)

....market street carpark above
how much does capital does it take to be a franchisee in a coffee franchise? Will we be able to get our capital back within a year?
I was thinking of finding nanyang coffee but maybe I will check out Mr Tea too..
Just stumbled upon this old post. Had to comment about Mr Tea.
I am a year 3 student from SMU. At the start of my time at SMU, I used to patronize Mr Tea frequently. But since moving their stall, the standard of service dropped drastically and the quality of the drinks is bad.
I had boycotted Mr Tea for close to 2 years now. Another point worth noting is that all my friends in SMU do not patronize them because we have received lousy service one way or another.
This is not merely an isolated incident involving a few people. Many students have complained and are not patronizing them anymore.
And one more thing. Dr Leslie I think to include Mr Tea on your Really Must Try List is not doing justice to the others on this prestigious list. Their consistency is too poor to deserve this honour.
Noted Andrew, due to the number of readers writing about this issue, it has now been taken off the "Really Must Try" List. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I shall need to go back to try it again myself.
les, seems like e branch in SMU is e problem..
maybe u should try both branches n see their standard differ..
e market street branch so far is quite ok, except for a couple of time..
Yes I think you are right.
In the meantime, lovers of Teh Si/Teh Tarik should check out the Teh Si at Victor's Kitchen. His HongKong Si Mud Milk Tea is the best I have tasted.
Yeah I think it is best that Dr Leslie visits the SMU branch if you happen to drop by. The standards might have improved over time since I decided not to go to their stall.
Anyway just to let you know, I am the same Andrew that recommended the Island Creamery ice cream shop.
Wow Andrew, good to know you are still reading the blog! Island Creamery was quite a while ago!
