Bedok Chwee Kueh: Simple, Comfort Food

Every wondered why Chwee Kueh is called Chwee Kueh? I have, and I don't have the answer for you. Chwee Kueh literally means Water Cakes. Perhaps they have a high proportion of water in the mix? Maybe some of our readers can enlighten us.

Anyone who frequents Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre will know about this famous Chwee Kueh Stall. OK, I am not a big fan of Chwee Kueh, so for me this one is pretty good. In fact, I don't really know how much better Chwee Kueh can get.

The texture of the Kueh is very smooth and the Chye Poh (Preserved Veg) is savoury and yummy. That is all I can say about the Chwee Kueh. Rave about it? Not really. Crave? Nope. But should you happen to take a bite of your friend's pack of Chwee Kueh, I'll bet you won't just stop at one. 4/5

Oh .... I LOVE THIS CHWEE KUEH! And I MUST eat it almost everytime I see it!(even though I know it's super unhealthy because of the oil.)

What I like is the Chye Poh which is finely chopped unlike the usual big ones we get in most other chwee keuh stalls... the texture of the chwee kueh is just nice ... smooth and not too "cake-ky" (not sure whether got such a word)

Actually, they have many branches... such as at Hougang Ave 1 market, Changi Village Hawker etc...

Not too keen eating chwee kuey. However Bedok, Tiong Bahru and the Pek kio are of good standard. The last I had chwee kuey was at Marine Parade. Pretty good, came piping hot with generious chai por and chilli.

Actually I find the chye poh too dry for my taste. I like mine with a little crunchness. There use to be a stall in Pasir ris selling just like that but it was closed down due to the coffeeshop closure.

I've always loved chwee kuey but i would like to relate an incident that happened to me just 2 hrs ago..

I bought $2 (8pcs) of chwee kuey at one of the "bedok chwee kuey" branches located at smith street, chinatown complex level 2.

I asked for extra chilli in which the auntie scooped me another half spoon of chilli. Upon seeing that was not enough for me, I took another spoon of chilli myself while informing them.

However, that brought me lectures from the auntie serving me and even from the auntie who was scooping the kueys from inside...All that for a mere spoon of chilli!!

I walked off with the thought that is that the way to do business??

However, I got even a bigger shock when i opened my packet of chwee kuey at home. I only got 7 pcs of chwee kuey!! (1 short of the original 8 pcs that i was supposed to get)

I guess this is definitely not the way to do business..if they are not satisfied with the extra chilli that i took, they could ask mi for extra $, and not shortchanged me.

This is terrible, I will definitely go and eat at that stall again..
