Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa: Thick and Rich for those with Strong Stomachs!
With Bashful Hunter, Tag, carnineviand, iwatch_ueat and liverpool
So this is the famous Depot Road Laksa! I can see why people rave about it so much. This is a "no holds barred, gimme your best shot" kind of laksa that would infuriate the people over at the Health Promotion Board. The day this laksa gets a "healthier choice award" would be the day that Singapore wins the World Cup. Not that it is impossible, but it may take a very very long time.
So for those who are young and fit and do not have any problems with indigestion or cholesterol, this is a bowl of heaven. For me it was a too much of a good thing. I managed only to have a small helping before my stomach began to protest and had to stop because I know that I am going to have regrets later. 4/5
Conclusion
Great for people like NS guys who have just spent 2 weeks eating combat ration! Guaranteed to quickly replenish your cholesterol deficit!

Another sinful manner to finish up the sinful laksa gravy.
Buy some you-tiaos before you visit this stall, use them to soak up the laksa gravy. You-tiao taste the best with laksa gravy.
Alternatives. Buy the pratas from the stall beside the laksa stall. Eat the prata with the laksa gravy. It is so much better than the prata curry they give.
Time for both Calories and Cholestrol budgeting.
Cheers!
O M G as delicious as the soaking-up-gravy-with-you-tiao-or-prata thing sounds, i don't think i ever will. it's just TOO unhealthy!
i wish i could with no consequences at all! maybe if i go on a starvation diet for one week before and one week after. haha.
Esmallitis you are a man after my own heart but not my stomach! But You Tiao or prata with this laksa would be GREAT! As is Crispy Fried Chicken Thigh Fillet!
why got no hum?
Mai hum.. mai hum.. mai hum..
their standard really have dropped tremendously ever since they've shifted out from Depot Rd.
Previously the gravy was very sweet from the prawn flavour. Now its just spicy.
I still miss their old flavour.
used to be a bit more lemak too... : )
I ate this a couple of months ago and I must say that it tastes pretty good. At least the balance of tastes are there although the richness isn't quite as much as some of the Katong Laksa versions. I wonder how it tasted when it was back at Depot Road?
This Laksa damned solid.
Interesting idea of dipping You Tiao/Prata....hmmm shld try it 1 day.
Hi all, just read on the Wan Bao (31/05/07) that the current stall in Alexandra is a fake.
The real owner sold the stall to the current owner in 2005 because she needed money for her medical treatment.
After recovering, she set up a new stall in the Telok Blangah area but has since moved to another area in Somerset.
The current owner continued to use her "Zhao Pai" ie stall name and even her newspaper clippings to sell his laksa.
When the real owner wanted to take back those clippings, the Alexandra owner refused to return and even wanted to report her to the police if she wants to take back the clippins "forcefully".
This might explained why the taste now is different from when the stall was in Depot Road. Coz its a completely different stall!!!
The real owner is seeking legal advice now....
Cheers all!
PS: And may i recommend you the Bak Kut Teh stall beside the Mr Avocado stall?...Its one of the best in Singapore, I think...hehe...
so this is a 'fake'?
i have tried this laksa b4 and i thot it tasted real gd already..esp on a cold and rainy day..pure comfort!
but wld like to try the original depot rd one to compare..
Oh no wonder! All these while I thought the current young man cooking the laksa was their son!
oh and ditto joey's comment on the BKT. I like it a lot and its not of the pepper soup variety. also can check out the BBQ seafood at the other corner.
oooh, you've finally done a review on ZSM Claypot Laksa... what took you so long? =)
The first time I tried it, it was at Depot Road, and it was really heaven! The gravy wasn't that laden with coconut milk, but with the taste of prawns instead! Very seafoody-sweet kind of laksa gravy.
After 2 years away from Singapore, I heard that it's moved to Alexandra. Went to try it, and thought it was still great, tho not as fantastic as the original Depot Road one.
Please find the original store owner, try her laksa and let us know your final review! =)
yup...the BKT not the peppery kind..good good...the BBQ Seafood mentioned by Southernoise is Rong Guang Seafood, I suppose....also good good! esp the bbq stingray with the chincalok...yum...
this is the not the stall that used to be at Depot Road....The older couply previously did it much better than this stall.....and the old lady who does all the cooking has fabulous memory...even with long queue at lunch....
This younger couple is less consistent with the gravy....
Tried the Killiney outlet and was shocked at the $8 tag that came along with it.
Not really value for money IMHO as the portion was rather measly.
Is there another branch at the Food Republic at Vivo? Had it recently and the taste is very similar.
I used to eat the Claypot Laska at Depot Road and true enough the one in Alexandra Village was no match to the one @ Depot Road.
Now there's one with the same name @ Depot Heights shopping centre. Dunno if it is the real one - but also not as good as previous one.
My cols love the depot road version. I am not sure why ple rave abt it. I try Depot road version too. To me is more curry powder than laska. The gravy is a bit thin... not really that nice...
I just try the claypot laksa today, i find that it's abit spicy, lucky i didn't add any chili into it, that my usual habit. The gravy is sweet and taste good. Best chose a seat with fan blowing on u if not you sure sweating all over...
I can take spicy food well. To me, ZSM laksa is too thick for my liking. It kind of lack some aroma in the food. Btw, I tried the stall at Alexandra market. I give it 3.5/5. Remember that this is not katong laksa. So Not as sweet.
I read earlier posts and the owner sold her stall to others and how to sue people? she doesnt have copyright to that name right?

hi, this stall at alexandra village is not operated by the lady boss leh, she franchised out. The lady boss operates at a shop at market street carpark. Today i went but found that the shop has moved out of market street carpark, do you happen to know where the shop has relocated? The boss cooks better than the couple at alexandra.
