Five Stars Chicken Rice: The Kampung Chicken is French!

With smart, pk, bashful hunter and introducing Doc!

Kampung Chicken $12 for half chicken

I am an unabashed lover of plump white chicken. To me eating Kampung Chicken is like eating peanuts one at a time when what I really want is to scoop a whole handful and stuff it in my mouth. So it is with trepidation that I accepted the invitation from Five Stars Chicken Rice to blog their famous Chicken Rice franchise.

For the uninitiated, Kampung Chicken is really a misnomer. The chickens are not really raised in a Kampung. What makes a Kampung Chicken different from your normal Chicken is that it is a different breed of chicken which originated from France. But then again that is not quite right either because as a species, all chicken actually originated from China where they were first domesticated. But anyway, this particular breed of "Kampung" chicken were actually brought from France because the local species actually went extinct.

The common battery hens which we are familiar with have white feathers and take about 60 days to grow to eating size. They spend their whole life in a cage with limited movement, pecking away at chicken feed (which is why if you sit in a sofa munching potato chips, you too will grow nice and fat). The Kampung Chicken has orange feathers and a black head and spends its days in an enclosed space for 80 days where they can exercise their muscles. That's why the chicken always reminds me more of a rock climber than a sumo wrestler.

Kampung Chicken: Half Chix $12

As Kampung Chicken go, this is one of the best ones that I have tasted. The chicken is tasty and the wonderful thing about five stars is that they always managed to get that layer of jelly under the skin which kind of makes up for the lack of fats. What I was really impressed with was the sauce that they use to pour over the chicken. The boss, Mr Li told me that the secret to their sauce is that they brew it themselves from soy sauce with added soy beans and rock sugar. The sauce had a wonderful floral aroma to it and synergized perfectly with the chicken. Taste great but as I already said, I felt I was eating peanuts one at a time! 4.25/5

The rice here is very good even though Mr Li admitted that he did not fry the rice in oil before cooking it. The interesting thing is that because Kampung Chicken has got more flavour than your battery chicken, a lot of the flavour of the rice comes from the chicken broth rather than the chicken fat. I was skeptical at first, but our group all agreed that the chicken rice was flavoursome and not too oily. The texture is also perfect with each grain easily separated and whole. 4.5/5

People say there are 3 important key ingredient in Chicken Rice and they are the Chicken, the Rice and the Chilli. I propose that there are 4, the fourth being the drizzling sauce. For me the first priority is the Chicken followed by the Rice, which is why I seldom comment about the Chilli. However, when stallowners like Mr Li makes the effort to use only lime juice instead of vinegar to make their Chilli, then I think I should give credit where it is due. They also add chilli padi in order to put that zing in the Chilli sauce. One whiff of the Chilli and you know its different from your usual Chicken Rice Chilli.

I took the picture of the "Bishops nose" for my two chicken rice connoisseurs, viz VB and smart. Those who know how to appreciate chicken say that the best part is the backside. So here are some backsides for you to oogle at! Me, I still like the big fat thighs.

Apart from the chicken rice, they also sell a variety of dishes to accompany the chicken rice so that your family can have a "proper" family style meal. One of the things that I would recommend is their homemade tofu. They actually make their own tofu here from soya bean milk and eggs and the texture is excellent. 4/5

Five Stars chicken rice has been around for 18 years. Mr Li initially named it five stars because he had five brothers and the initial plan was to have all five brothers run the business. He was nice enough to agree to share with us his chicken rice recipe for the benefit of those who might want to try to cook chicken rice at home and especially for our poor overseas friends who can't hop down to the hawker centre to have their chicken rice fix. Stay tuned for that one!

Conclusion

I was pleasantly surprised with my Kampung Chicken meal. The chicken turned out to be tender and tasty and together with the excellent sauce and rice, it did make up for the lack of chunky meatiness. All my other kakis actually prefer this over the fat white chicken because the chicken had more "chickeny" taste. For me, I think I would only be totally happy if they could serve me a kampung chicken that is morbidly obese!

Are u sure iz nice???

Dun u think their rice too huge to swallow? And de chicken, de colour already turns me off...

Been there once n will not go again.

I think one little stall at Arcade @ Raffles Place sells much better chicken rice. U can literally eat de rice with chilli and still feel satisfied.

Frankly, any stall which needs to be invited for review is not really a gem...

JMHO

angela - thats a bit of a sweeping statement. some stalls are good but may not have enough exposure.

else they use bloggers as a new medium of advertising. advertising creates awarenesss. why not..

I'll take the Kampung chicken anytime over the normal battery chicken. Growing up in Malaysia, I used to get the real mccoy (literally chickens wondering in the kampung!)and am spoiled. My parents used to even freeze these chickies and bring them across the causeway when they come visit. These days I get them frm the local market. Not as good but still better than the battery chicken.

One characteristic of the kampung chicken is the nice and slightly chewy flesh and of course the crunchier texture of the skin. The bonus is that the skin is usually not to fat and you wont feel guilty eating it. I have to say that most Singaporeans cannot appreciate the kampung chicken because they complain that the flesh is too tough. It is an acquired taste :))

Is this part of the usual Five Star Chicken Rice chain of restaurants?

irwin, there is a special section for you to promote anything you want in the forum.

Angela,

Five Stars is widely known as serving one of the best kampung chicken rice in Singapore. I would have blogged them sooner or later.

Not every restaurant that invites me to blog gets onto the blog. There are many sets of pictures in my archives that don't make it to the blog. ie I try to make sure that there is a certain level before the institution gets blogged. Sometimes I get them to improve their food before returning again. If it is improved then they get blogged.

Yes, this is the Five Star Chain. They have about 4 stores island wide.

We never hv the (soya) sauce to drizzle at home with the old mother hen. I think it is a commercial thing coz it is savoury and hence, everything just tastes better!

Okay, the only time I remember eating the real mccoy was when we were trekking in Nepal! After a full day of trekking around the mountain, anything tasted good!

Eh? I thought I remember you complaining how tough the kampung chicken were?

I still prefer the plump white chicken to the kampung chicken - seriously dunno wat's the deal with the latter. Eaten at 5-star many times but not so impressed, to be blatantly honest.

Having said that, I would still go to five-star - only for their 'hua dan hor fun' which boasts of a fantastic 'wok hei' in my opinion (It was discovered by surprise, because I wanted to try out stuff other than their chicken rice) and a couple of specialty dishes like the homemade tofu featured in this post.

For the same price, I would rather hop over to Boon Tong Kee for a fatter and juicier chicken. I've been a regular since their chains underwent an image overhaul and with the inclusion of decent cze-char dishes like the 'sup kum toufu'

Think Angela is referring to the Chicken House (which also sells cold crabs) next to Dino's at Upper Thomson Road. The chicken there is er.... too yellowish = scary for me.

Five Star is located pretty far from Chicken House :)

damien - which part of 5 star chicken rice, sounds like chicken house??????? where in this blog is there a crab sign for the chicken rice stall????? and then ask where her comment is when its still up there???

i got no patience for people who don't read properly and get all facts wrong from heaad to toe, and then make stupoid assumptions and statements.

sorry - bad mood.

5 Star Kampong Chicken Rice in Serangoon Garden came and gone. Why?

Pow Sing still around, Other chicken rice stalls in coffee shops there still around. Tried 5 Star chciken rice there once and didn't like it. Like Pow Sing better. Other chicken rice stall so so.

ToeNeil said...

5 star is no longer in serangoon gardens, but those taking over its premises also sells chicken rice...

5 star de chicken is very tender and juicy...

over here, pow sing is clearly the winner.. i used to pack their chicken rice when i was working in the area n their staff always gave us disc n more food each time we go over.

pow sing sells only the white boiled chicken... while their stall in the coffeshop sells roasted chicken/char siew n roasted pork...

one weird thing is... roasted chicken rice @ coffeshop is $2.50.. @ pow sing restaurant the white chicken rice is $4... but if u pack, it is only $3...

Holy Drummer,

I've deserted BTK since the day they sacrilegeously 'overhauled', included cze-char dishes, upped their prices, and artificially made their portions appear bigger by inserting heaps of cucumber slices under the chicken meat.

sumosumo said...

Ms Loi = BTK - hear hear. never go there unless half dead from hunger and cant be bothered to hunt for better chicken rice. the one at balestier, their flagship especially is a ripoff!

anon - 5 star standards vary from branch to bracnh. the one at east coast opposite holy family is really popular and outperforms BTK next to it.

the one at river valley is relatively deserted, and losing out to BTK.

so these 2 chains are going head to head.

3 cheers for sumosumo, hip hip hooray (3x). Couldn't agree more with his comments on BTK and 5 stars. Was a big fan of BTK balestier back in '83 but no more. Don't go to 5 stars river valley if you can help it but don't mind the east coast one if they hold the MSG ;-).
Ieat, I remember reading somewhere in your blog about your mum-in-law being a "true blue" hainanese, wonder what is her verdict?

TAG said...

Hands and feet up for BTK, BTK River valley and Balastier Rd is fast becoming a tourist trap, had food there at RV branch 3 months back. Chicken and 2 dishes plus drinks came to over 30+. They serve their chicken over a bed of cucumber to maximise the look (like you getting your money's worth only to be disappointed) and on a plate 2.5-3 times over the portion of chicken.

Seriously I rather have chicken served to me on a very tiny plate like those in your neighbourhood chicken rice stall. (case of glass half empty or half full?) You feel that stall owner is trying his best to pile up on the tiny plate.

5 stars at Serangoon Gardens chose a very competitive place to do their business. There are 5 other stalls incld Pao Xing competing for the same stomach !!! Imagine 6 stalls of chicken rice within 300m range. So please give 5 stars some slack, their chicken rice is quite alrite, just that most of us are used to eating the farm chicken so are not used to their kampung chicken, ieat is not someone who publishes his review just becos he was invited over to review the food. He would give his very frank opinion of wad he had and if its not up to mark, it wud not get publish in his blog, sometimes it get blog becos other food item are worth a mention but the main item might get a low rating eg. like 3/5. There are many food reviews that don't make it to this blog. nuff said.

5 Star choosing Upper Thomson may not be a wise move as there are already 2 established and good chicken rice stalls there. Unless its food is good, 5 Star faces more competition in Thomson than Serangoon Gardens.

5 Star at Upper East Coast is good but cannot be sure of the franchisees or branches.
