wow.. nice forum
Hope it doesn't end up like some food forum where every little comments get pounce on by some self-professed know-it-all m*k*nguru

ieat said...

Well, that can happen anywhere, not just in a food forum. We try our best to keep the Forum in the same spirit as the blog. But at the same time we don't want to restrict free speech. So it is really up to everyone to keep the kampung spirit alive and continue to share share their food knowledge, make friends and find something good to eat.

It happens in the blog too. See how su**su** lost his cool on da**** and ang*** in the five star comments. boh bian lah.

Leslie, to be honest, its time you get your own domain - for your blog as well as your new forum. Your traffic isn't exactly very low. At around 5K a day, there is no reason why need to help blogger to build up their links. They dont need you to help them!

And why are you trying to start a forum on somewhere that does not belong to you?

Those links that you are trying to build can just gone from the internet just like that because for the fact you do not own them. That is the downside of blogging on free blogs.

When you reach the stage of xiaxue or kennysia or those top bloggers one day, you would realise the thing you had painstakingly built up does not belong to you and can be taken away just like that if they wish.

The longer you take to migrate your blog to your personal hosting domain, the more it is going to cost you. All serious bloggers in the world have a domain, its like you buy your own shop instead of renting it from others. One year only $20, whats stopping you? Few years down the road, if you decided to migrate, it will cost you many times more than $20 man!

Do it early rather than later! If you want to be a serious blogger, you will have to do it one day, just a matter of when - and the cost of doing it.

ieat said...

Yeah, I have thought about that.

If you can help me can you email me directly? leslie.tay@gmail.com

Maybe you need a moderator for your moderator :)

Presently the forum is a register only forum. Means unless I register I can even read anything. Perhaps you can change that. Honestly there are many of us here who are not interested in the politics and squabbling of self professed food gurus and hence wont be posting anything. All we want is to read what others say about places to eat etc. Maybe you will see more people reading it than the 400 over members now.

khim said...

anonymous,

i dunno if there is 1 or more of u..

well, if u dare to say or comment, u should have e guts to register urself instead being "anonymous"

it's anonymous' comments sprouting nonsense/flaming tat we can't control

yes, e forum is for registered readers only - but it doesn't mean tat u die die have to post anything after u register!

just like wat u said, after registering, u will be able to read what others say about places to eat!

sumosumo was in a bad mood when he posted & had since apologised.. dun tell me u never snapped before?

hopefully, ieat's forum will be political-free & flame-free, but if it doesn't, tis is where we moderators will step in to help ieat before things get outta control

frankly, i hate replying to anonymous as i can't address direct to him or her, so pls do give urself a pen name & hopefully, we'll see ur registered nick in e forum! =)

cheers

Anonymous said...

Khim, in all fairness, not flaming anyone but after lashing out at someone and then typing 3 words in the same post is not really very sincere an apology. Im referring to you saying that Sumo has made an apology. Correct me if I am wrong cos I have looked through the posts over and over and cannot find any other apology.

Yes everyone has his or her bad day but in this case... the comments are not even directed at the person who flared up but rather Angela got the stall wrong and she on the other hand did make a sincere apology in another post.

The three words are

Sorry-Bad Mood...

It sounds like I punch you and then as you go down on the floor in pain, I shout at you. SORRY HOR! I BAD MOOD!

I initially had the same sentiment & had offered the same suggestion but after hearing from Leslie, I believe in his rationale on why the forum should remain status quo.

Perhaps if you'd ask Leslie and hear from the man himself. You have his e-mail.

i have only 1 thing to say:

- if u want to join a club, u follow the club rules. if u dont like the rules, dont join the club.

choice is all yours.........

'nuff said.

Anonymous said...

Sigh so does this club mean that it's senior members condone bashing other "non senior" members or non makan kakis of the doctor?

It's not about club rules, it's about being polite and as a Mod I think that you should know that better of all persons. Or is the whole thing just a personality cult filed with yes men boosting the ego of certain members? Mods are there to hold the peace not to stir up trouble by flaming and giving non sincere "SORRY BAD MOOD"

CK

sumosumo said...

SIGH..........
i was referring to what HD said on the rules regarding registration of members who wanted to read the forum, if that wasn't clear enough for you.

your spiel about yes men, senior members condoning this and that, personality cults etc are your own inferences and polemics. i m not going to argue with u.

ieat said...

The club rules sumosumo was referring to pertain to the fact that we would like members to register before being able to view the forum. This is what we have decided after considering the pros and cons at this moment in time.

As to the issue concerning the dispute, may I request that members take their personal disputes offline? Since we can't contact you, perhaps you can write to me at leslie.tay@gmail.com and I will set up the platform whereby this issue can be settled amicably.

ieat said...

BTW CK,

All of my regular makankakis have come via the blog. Most of them simply write to me and say they want to join in. So it is by no means a secret society. It is open to anyone as long as there is no other agendas other than food and making friends. All you have to do is to write to me.

kdlang said...

Well, at least now we know that a moderator in this forum can just bash someone with the now-classic "SORRY BAD MOOD" excuse.
And when someone else pointed out this incident, fellow moderators will join in to defend him/her - jolly good show of teamwork and a classic case of cyber-gangsterism.
Finally that someone is accused of using his/her "own inferences and polemics" - for pointing out what was said in the 1st place.
What a great start!
And thanks for being upfront. :D

ieat said...

There are two platforms. The blog and the forum.

The blog is written by myself and there are no moderators in the blog.

So this is a dispute between two readers in the blog. Please take it offline.

This is a food blog n let stay as at it is for the interest of all foodies.Yes Angela made a mistake but she later admitted the mistake n I think she is brave to say so. I thank n appreciate Angela. Sometime we should not let our emotion works against us n bombard someone who made the mistake, for this I appologise to those readers who are offended by this single incident.
Let us not confuse with the blog's intention n regulations. So let look forward to more good food recommendation from Dr. Leslie.
I have aged now almost 60yrs n I can understand how young turks fight over an issue. When I was young I fired up easily n later regret that I done wrong. You can email me too at smartgoh@gmail.com. Maybe we have chance to meet over a drink or some simple makan.Gog bless.

Sorry mistake liao shud be God Bless.

khim said...

kdlang,
if u know nothing abt e whole incident, i rather u stay silent..

CK,
ya, i was actually refering to e particular apology. i'm not defending him becos he's a fellow moderator but it's better than totally bashing u up & walk off without saying anything right?

in fact, in another thread, sumo is organizing a durian trip to m'sia becos of angela as she's also anther durian enthusiast like himself!

so actually, most of our regular kakis here, like wat les said, came together for e luv of food, so we have no hard feelings after a small disagreement.. damien also met sumo a few time for makan sessions before.. it's like a one-off issue.. so let it pass, alright?

btw, sumo - just word of advise: next time u bad mood, dun post lar! =p

hope to see u in our next makan session, CK! =) have u joined e makan session end of tis month?

Anonymous said...

Thank you for your explanation Khim. I wish to stress again that I am not having a dispute with Sumo. Rather I was more concerned about his behavior despite being a moderator. If I couldn't care less, I won't bother to say anything but I spoke up because I don't want to see this festering and affecting how people view the forum.

Anyway enough said, I just wanted to make it clear I am not having a dispute with Sumo but rather I am pointing out that as Mods, we hope not to see such incidents. And if you want to make an apology, making one sincere one in another post means alot more than 3 words in the same post with a whole load of bashing. It really means nothing as it sounds more like a "Im in a bad mood so I can be excused for bad behavior" After all its abit contradictory that a person can feel anger and rage and yet apologetic at the same moment and post everything together in the same post...

CK

Anonymous said...

I apologize, grammatically one of my sentences is wrong.

"as Mods, we hope not to see such incidents."

What I mean is as you guys are the mods, we hope not to see such incidents from you

CK

sumosumo said...

CK has made his pt, no need for others to come in to add fuel or fire.

i apologise for the outburst. its not in the interest of this blog to have a flame war.

CK - come to the makan session, kiss and make up over food and drinks, how bout that? Joe's kitchen. 26th april.

Lets clear up the cloud a little, no one here is a self professed makanguru, its just that some of us are more passionate about certain food that they have a deeper knowledge about and care to share with the rest of us here. Eg. Take me for example, I'm half hainanese/cantonese but I grew up at the old bugis street, Hainam street 1, 2 and 3 area so I grew up eating chicken rice and hainanese pork chops and dim sum at the old empress tea house and many more. I would naturally be more likely to leave comments for food items in my dialect group. If you been reading this blog long enuff, you would notice that fasionfoodie, uncle smart am always quick to respond to teochew food reviews in the blog as they are true blue teochews. Ditto for those in the other dialect groups.

ok on that comment that drew so much flak in the 1st place

Quote

"i got no patience for people who don't read properly and get all facts wrong from heaad to toe, and then make stupoid assumptions and statements.

sorry - bad mood. "

IMO its just a quick off the cuff remark from a very straight forward guy, people in cyberspace can be a little blunt sometimes but do read it with a pinch of salt. Angela might have got the wrong picture cos ieat also did review Chicken House at an earlier date and if you were to click "Chicken Rice" under the food directory banner you would find Chicken House 1 review below 5star and might have gotten the wrong picture cos she might have over scroll (happens to many of us when its a big page). 5star@east coast is sumo favorite chicken rice joint at the moment, so he's just passionate about his fav place and just pointing out he doesn't agree with the earlier wrong posting.

Any more grievances pls e-mail direct to ieat or even better join us on our food tasting sessions or periodic makan sessions. Let not deviate from our fav subject ie. Good Food. Remember to post your own comments if you tried the food that is being reviewed for better or worse. Cheers

hey CK,

no worries, i'm really glad tat everything is cleared up now!

yes, u r rite: as Mods, we really hope not to see such incidents..

pls do join us for e makan session! it'll be good to see those regular readers of ieat! =)

thanks tag for e post! ;)

Again I emphasize that there are no moderators in the blog. There is only one function available and that is to delete the comments. The only person with that ability is myself, the blog author.

Khim has been the popularly accepted blog monitoress since the early days. So unofficially, she is the one who tries to keep everyone in line and preserve the Kampung spirit of the blog.

Tim said...

Leslie > I wonder why is there a need to have a registered forum? I mean whats wrong with entering and read without registering? I mean even leaving a comment on your blog doesnt require any kind of registration.

As far i know, there are very few forums in the world that requires registration even for reading! You are simply keeping out many potential registrants who would do more than simply read!

Its liken to selling donut without displaying it! You are good with food no doubt but regarding this forum thingy i must say the logic is not quite right.

ieat said...

Okay, let's put all the cards on the table. I have started a thread in the forum where we can look at this issue more closely.
http://ieatishootipost.proboards50.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=rules&thread=267

ieat said...

When I started the forum, my intention was exactly to have guests to view and registered members to comment, but the program will not allow for this.

So I had to restrict the viewing to registered members only or else non-registered members can also comment and that will lead to a lot of spamming.

So I am looking at this issue and trying to figure out how to make it work so that everyone (or almost everyone) is happy.

Tim said...

Leslie > If i want to spam, i would spam your blog first. What for i want to go to the forum to spam? Your blog has more readers!

interesting comments found on a more "established" food forum;

Well, the purpose of this thread was to critique food bloggers.

This is a tough forum to launch a food blog because we have a group of very discerning people who knows the difference between the flavour of smoky charcoal as opposed to mere char.

HFB made the mistake of trying his luck here because I think there's a lot of negative feelings when ieat became successful because - I'm speculating here - he did not credit his successful launch to this forum and hence HFB got the backlash.

Personally, a few of us have attended meals organized by ieat where the restaurant owner waived payment (we forced payment in the end) and we've told ieat that we would not want to attend such dinners as it is unethical, dishonorable and distasteful.

We are not sure if this practice is still going on as he's found his own group of like-minded people and no longer participates with us, but I like to believe that ieat's Christian beliefs are genuine.

My only wish is that ieat would give credit where credit is due, or at least make it less obvious he's copying ideas off this forum.

So, in conclusion, HFB was confident enough to think that as he could get away with posting on this forum because he posted successfully on less discerning forums and got toasted (can you smell the Wok Hei now?).

A little unfairly perhaps, but hey, it's the Internet... It's very fierce.

Anyway people jumping in to make comments are fun; keeps the blog lively, as some people have seen what happened to me recently.

and more

the last i heard from a restauranteur, they invited him, they gladly waived it since thye invited him for a dinner for 2. and he said he was looking to try a particular premium item, and the restaurant did it on request for him for the second visit, he gladly assumed it was free ... maybe 4 pax..
dont think he featured the place also

Dear Mr. A (hope I know your Real name or Penname) n mb.Firstly thanks for reading ieat's blog which will help to increase his readership. Also tks for the little gossips. May I hope u have some contsructive to write in future.
Yes I am reading one of the established food forum run by 'mankansutra'. Mr. Seetoh is the pioneer n guru of Spore Food and have my most respect. Some of the veterans like TTC n EsLim are real gentlemen n I respect them for organising the monthly mankanstutra dinners n their fair comments in that forum.Their food knowledge excel.I hope I can one day join this dinner and meet them personally.
I love to read other food blogs too. I have learn a lot from them whether they are newbies or oldies. They are all passionate in our common interest i.e. FOOD.

Firstly, my apologies, I should've explain myself initially. The previous 2 comments was posted by myself.
I've been a fan of ieat's blog since day 1. And to see comments like that made in the other forum by the, eh, "more discerning foodies", especially one whose blog ieat is "motivated by" and "pay homage to" - it would be good if ieat himself can clarify there.
Again, my apologies, this is just something I'll like to bring to the attention of this blog.
