Fatty Ox Hong Kong Roast Duck: He's not Fat and He's No Ox, but He's Back!

The stall is closed wef 29 June 2009, the owner is looking for a new location

Roast Duck $32 each

Fans of Fatty Ox Hong Kong Roast Duck can rejoice that their favourite Hong Kong Roast Meat man is back after a one and a half year hiatus.

Unlike some other stalls whose "comeback" is claimed by a relative or an ex-employee of the place, this one is a proper return to the pugalistic world (Chung2 Chu4 Jiang1 Hu2) of the famed roaster, Fatty Ox. The last time I met Mr Fatty Ox was just before he closed his shop at Murray Street. Since then Mr Cheung, who is neither fat nor bears any resemblance to an Ox (The only truth in the stall name is the fact that he is indeed from Hong Kong) has been roaming the HDB estates looking for a suitable place to once again entice Singaporeans with his Roast Duck.

I am sure glad he is back because his Roast Duck is still one of the best around. Tender and nicely spiced and served with plum sauce, I gave it high marks in my last review and I am glad to report that standards have not dropped. 4.5/5

Char Siew $32 per kg

When it comes to Char Siew, I had the most mind blowing experience recently when our makan kaki Wahcow, bless his soul, tarpaued this incredible Char Siew from KL which is like 50% meat, 50% fat but 100% shiok. That Char Siew scores a 4.85 from me but sadly I have not come across any that is close to it this side of the border.

Fatty Ox's Char Siew doesn't come close but is one of the better ones around. In terms of tenderness and juiciness it scores very highly. However, it still lacked that X factor when it comes to the taste. Alas, now that I have tasted that KL Char Siew, I might not be completely satisfied with any of the local ones anymore! 4.25/5

The Sio Bak was tender and juicy and meat has a great flavour. It is much better than a lot of other places where the Sio Bak is always cut too thin and the meat is completely dry. My only complaint that day is that the skin wasn't as crispy as it should be. That could be because I went after the lunch hour, so it wasn't freshly roasted. If you want the best roast meat experience, you might want to get there at around 11am to get the roast just when it comes out of the oven. 4.25/5

Conclusion

I am sure fans of Fatty Ox will be making a beeline to his new location. They still have one of the best roast duck in town in my opinion and the Sio Bak should also be one of the best around if you get it when it is just out from the oven.

Hi! Do u think that this is a close contestant to Fatty Cheong @ ABC? Which one is better? I tried the Fatty Cheong after reading your recommendation, damn shiok!

ieat said...

If I remember correctly, I think Fatty Cheong learnt his skills from Fatty Ox, so one is the Sifu and the other the Tudi. Fatty Ox's Roast Duck is definitely better. I still prefer Fatty Cheong's Char Siew. Sio Bak very comparable.

mooohahahaha...the fatty KL char siew got you didnt it ? cactus is up there !!! maybe sms him to tabao for all of us.

i think our char siew in singapore got fight, we never really compared eye to eye. I asked for a "slimmer" version of the char siew in KL at the same place and it didnt impress me that much.

So if you can convince fatty cheong/ox to do an experiment with 50% fat 50% meat char siew.....i will be there !!!!

damn...i so miss char siew now....

it's Cong2 Chu1 Jiang1 Hu2 lar!!

ieat said...

Haha! My China really cannot make it!

Anyway Wahcow, that is a great idea. I might get Fatty Cheong to do a special Char Siew session for us. If we can organize a big enough group, I will discuss with him your cunning plan.

I like skinny char siews leh, but the duck and roast meat looks really good~ Drool~ Torture for me been busying myself at home whole morning and now I'm absolutely ravenous~

When Fatty Ox was at Murray, it was better than Fatty Cheong. This new one I not tried yet. But I found both their Char Siew too fat. I really do think that heavenly char siew must have good proportion of fats, but since I don't want to go heaven yet, I will skip it. But I liked Ox's Roasted Duck. Yummy!

ieat said...

I guess you haven't tried the heavenly char siew from KL? It really was unexpectedly good. Never thought Char Siew could taste so great. But yes, too much of the heavenly char siew could send you to heaven earlier than expected.

Both Fatty OX and Fatty Cheong have lean cuts which I think they give to most people. The fatter cuts only on request or when they spy someone who looks like they will enjoy the fatter cuts.

These mouthwatering pictures are making me hungry and I just had lunch! Just look at the glistening, oily skin of the char siew!!yummmm. I definitely want to check this place out.

ieat, I know its not related to this post in any way, but thought i should give u feedback on my dining experience at Yi Bao. The roast duck hor fun set meal was really really not worth the $9 I paid. Perhaps I should have tried the chicken since that was what you blogged about the last, but somehow I can't imagine it would that much greater. The horfun was clumpy, and the gravy was gluey and tasteless. It was so bad I practically doused it with light soy sauce. The duck was totally average, nothing to rave about at all. I used to eat at Yibao more when they first opened in HV and I remember it being pretty decent then. After last sunday's lunch visit there I seriously doubt I will ever go back there again. Yeh, so giving you my few cent's worth. :)

50% fat 50% meat they will close down as faster than the fat melts. No way they can survive in Singapore selling this version.

Anonymous said...

is fatty ox still the same tze char style as before? or does it only selling roasted meats now?

fatme said...

Have tried their char siew and sio bak not impress.Fatty cheong's char siew is still the one to beat.Sio bak still not impress with any of the recommendation so far.

ieat said...

The best one at Fatty Ox is the duck.

Anime, please write to my email so that I can let you know details of our fatty char siew makan session.

Yes Fatty Ox is doing his Cze Char in the evenings.

it doesnt look oily. great to try without getting fat =]

sumosum said...

leslie, how come you still haven't gone to try the Chen's Roast Meats at Alexander village? Not as famous as all these, but their char siew/sio bak is definitely in the 4 category..

fatty ox is more HK style charsiew/siew yoke rice. ie charsiew is less sweet and the sauce they pour over the rice and charsiew is the thinner less gooey version which is served in HK..

sumosumo said...

maybe the charsiew degustation, u could get him to try different cuts of the meat.

i personally think the pork neck is the best cut for char siew..

liverpool1965 said...

Have not noticed Chen's before sumo, which stall? I always have by char siew fun at Lau Phua Chay Roasted Duck... :)

sumosumo said...

liverpool - its in the inner row oppposite a corner chicken rice stall... the corner chicken rice is nearest the road which u drive into alexander village, the road that leads towards the FC. it has a red sign board on top..

ladyironchef said...

wow, the roast duck sure tempt me. but where is it near? anyone know which part of north bridge road?

liverpool1965 said...

thanks sumo, will pay them a visit this Wed! :)

sumosumo said...

'pool let me know what u thikn... go in the mornings.. when its freshly roasted on their premises...

for the charsiew, ask for the 50% fat one..

khim said...

hi laundrygirl,

since it's unrelated to tis post & since ieat has already blogged on yi bao, i would suggest tat u post ur experience in e related posts..

tat way, anyone who wanna visit can read abt others' experience. by posting in unrelated posts, it's hard for others to read abt e feedback/experience..

i had copied ur comments & pasted in e relevant post.

Hey Doc, that Tengkat Tong Shin (TTS) KL Char Siew stall you mentioned, I used to stay at a condo almost directly opposite that stall for over 10 years before I moved to S'pore a few months ago, so trust me, if you think that TTS char siew is heavenly - I thought so too but that was before I tried Oversea (not Overseas) Restaurant, Jalan Imbi branch, about 10 minutes walk from TTS. I would give TTS Char Siew a 3/5 compared to Oversea's 4.9/5. Enjoy!

Was a fan of Fatty Ox a few years ago, my wedding piglet and roast duck for traditional ceremony was ordered from there when they are at Murray terrace. Thus very excited that they are back, and made an order for CNY.

But to my disappointment, its no longer the best duck in Singapore. Its a bit dry, and the char siew is overdone, very tough even though they are using half-fat half-lean meat. Maybe its the CNY crowd (though the stall seems quite quiet)that the quality is severely lacking.

It really very yummy.

This stall is now closed, went down 2 days ago and the stall seems to be deserted for some time, maybe ieat could give the owner a call and verify this.

ieat said...

Thanks for that update. The stall is indeed closed and the owner is looking for a new location. Will update when they settle down in their new premises.
