Sri Bastari: Is my Ayam Penyet? Changi Village Hawker Centre Part 3 of 7

With smart, holydrummer and iwatch_ueat

For those who go to Changi Village Hawker Centre but never bother to venture across to the market side..... well you have been missing out on quite a gem! Ok, I am really talking about the biggest Sua Gu (Mountain Tortoise) which is myself!

Ayam Penyet is the healther alternative to Nasi Lemak. The rice is made from Chicken stock instead of coconut and taste very much like Hainanese chicken rice, rice. The rice here is delicious. They use good quality jasmine rice, so that each grain is lovely, fluffy and flavoursome!

Penyet means to flatten. Each piece of chicken is deep fried then flattened with a wooden mallet. Poor chicken, kenna slaughtered, dismembered and dunked in hot oil still not enough, after that still kenna whacked some more! Si Gao Si Si (Dead, really really Dead) I love Indonesian/Malay style grilled chicken. The lovely lemongrass, tumeric, cumin and coriander spices really goes so well with chicken. Unfortunately, the chicken that day just missed that extra kick I was expecting. 4/5 In all fairness, smart who brought us there said that they were really much better the last few times he visited.

The chilli lovers will love the big dollop of chilli sauce they provide with the set. The chilli is roughly cut and stewed till soft and has a sweetish tangy taste. Very unique indeed!

Conclusion

If you have not tried this, you should. My gut feel is that the chicken might very well taste much better when I return. The good news is that they now have another stall over at the food centre side next to the famous Nasi Lemak stalls. But if you want to eat from the original stall, then you have to cross to the market side.

Sorry the chicken served was a drumstick and not well goreng. It should be crispy. This stall also sell fish very crispy too but some day they change the type of and can spoil your day. So please check the fish before you order. They are expanding very fast and from my count they have a 4th Branch now! I hope they dont drop on the quality.

agree with smart... Quality has dipped. It's goreng (fried) chicken not grilled.

Thanks for the correction, the blog has been edited to reflect this point.

Kudos to smart for this one. I wouldn't have known there were more food stalls over at the market side if not for him.

The star for me was not much the chicken, but the rice and the soup *grin*. Much so because of the generous dashing of shallots 'bawang' they give. Cheap thrill lol

I was observing the encik putting in the ingredients for the rice. My advice is: Don't look. =x Just enjoy the end-product.

Yeah, a hidden gem in CV.

Standard must have dropped since the review. Had this for lunch today. Rice, chilli and soup were ok, not fantastic but the chicken was tough and tasted flat. Won't eat at this stall again. Didn't feel I got my $4.00 worth.

More authentic and delicious ayam penyet should be Ayam penyet served with plain rice (not chicken rice)and sweet sour vegetable soup (Sayur asam). Try Ayam Penyet at B1 Fusionopolis Foodchain foodcourt. Itd delicious and authentic. More value for money. Ayam/Ikan Penyet set meal with the sayur asam. Serve during lunch- office crowd. They also serve delicious 'Ayam/Ikan Bakar Pasundan'(grilled, you can never find in other part of singapore. Opening soon at Simei MRT NTUC Foodfare in March 2009!

guys .......if you have time do try out my wifes ayam penyet at blk 123 bedok north street 2 ( Jin Piao coffee shop ) ....My parents and her just opened shop there on 7th june 2009 ( Malay stall next to indian stall )

My wife is from Bandung/Indonesia and have been cooking for my family and friends ayam penyet occasionally all this while , i am glad she finally has the opportunity to showcase her Ayam Penyet for everyone to enjoy . Her ayam penyet is served with normal rice but a lot of good reviews received for the chicken and especially the chilli . My mum makes the soup , even though traditional ayam penyet does not actually come with soup . ( personally i prefer eating with soup cos if not its a bit dry aint it ? )

price is a reasonable $ 3.50 , for ayam penyet served in a traditional way on a wooden plate with the salad and tomato and tempeh and tahu and all .....

Relatively , this is our first time in the food business , we are a bit inexperienced but we try to serve food to our customers the best we could .

If u guys do try it out and find it good do let others know , if you guys find something lacking do let us know , u can call me or sms me at 91056210 ...
