Yummy Wanton Mee: Singapore style Sarawak Kolo Mee!

Kolo Mee $3 per bowl shown here with extra fried Sui Gao

Recently there has been several shops offering Sarawak Kolo mee but these sell their Kolo mee at Cafe prices and the last time I ate Kolo Mee, I felt that the meat sauce was a bit salty and overpowers the taste of the noodles.

So I was very delighted to find this stall in Tampines Round Market that sells Kolo Mee, Singapore style at $3 a bowl.

Kolo Mee actually tastes different from the mee we are used to. It is whiter in colour and is very curly like instant noodles. It is white in colour because they use only egg white. The noodles also smell different because there is no alkali (Kee) used in the manufacturing process.

This is the first wonton mee seller that told me that his noodles should be taken WITHOUT chilli. That was surprising as all the rest take a lot of pride in their chilli sauce. All the stallowner did was cook the Kolo Mee and add a dash of fried shallot oil and soy sauce.

Now, before you actually eat the noodles, do yourself a favor and just take a good long whiff of the noodles. It is quite fragrant. The noodles are good enough to be eaten by itself without the condiments, but this stall's Char Siew and Sui Gao are actually pretty good too. Simple yet surprisingly good bowl of wanton mee. 4.25/5

The Sui Gao here has got enough water chestnuts to give it the sweetness and crunchiness. Worth getting a bowl as a side order.

Conclusion

Probably the cheapest Kolo Mee in town and quite a novel experience if you have not tried Kolo Mee this way. My only question is that if mee can be made without "Kee" why don't more people make it that way since a lot of people complain about the smell of "alkali" in poorly made noodles.

Any comparison with the Jia Xiang Kolo mee shops in Chinatown and other places?

Damien said...

IMHO, Jia Xiang is overpriced and not consistent.

The only outlet worth trying is along the popular porridge stall near the former Pisces Shopping Mall.

The one at VivioCity and Marina Square not very consistent. Sometimes, they overcook the noodles and stingy with the ingredients.

This stall also sell other types of noodles, come in green, red etc.

Yeah, I agree with Damien about Sarawak Kolo Mee being not consistent in their various outlets.

I tried it the first time at Chinatown 2 years back, and I was pretty impressed thou it's abit pricey. Had it at vivo the second time, and I thought it's not as good as the one in chinatown.

Great that you just recommend this cheaper one.

Frankly if you want good Sawarak Koko Mee must goto Sarawak.A guy working at Transtar Tour from Sarawak agreed with me

I've tried the one at Golden Shoe Carpark at this eatery called Mei Xin. The Kolo mee was served with a generous scoopful of minced meat gravy, slices of charsiew, green veggies and quite a large portion of noodles at $3.50, pretty decent for city prices. However, it wasn't a knock your socks off bowl of noodle that I'd have like. Will make a trip down to Tampines to check this place out.

Now as I said this is Singapore Wanton Mee but they use the Sarawak Kolo Mee instead of the usual egg noodle. So you get to appreciate the taste of the noodles only. Does not come with meat sauce. So you are not getting a cheap bowl of Sarawak Kolo Mee hor.

Just by knowing that the noodles does not have alkali (kee) is already worth the effort to try!!! I always cannot stand the "kee" on poorly cooked noodles, and usually throw the whole packet away.

I totally agree! This stall's noodles are good! I only eat from this stall when I go there for breakfast.

Is the stall still there.. would like to taste the kolo mee quality. it is true.. to really eat the authentic kolo mee...make a trip to kuching. The noodles is make fresh daily basis or you do need to keep them in really cold fridge. What i understand "Kee" keeps the noodle last longer. As and when friends coming out from kuching, i place order for the kolo mee (uncooked version) sold by the Kilo. And you can just cook it at home. The noodle is the main dish.

Yes it is still there. Must buy the Kolo mee & order extra swee gao. For some reason Kolo mee in Kuching is so so good.

The best wanton mee in Singapore used to be in a coffee shop at Balestier Road. Earlier years he was at Prome Road. An old couple with help from son and daughter. Do you know where he is now?
