Hiong Kee Dumplings: Hong Lim Food Centre 5 of 7

With smart, iwatch_ueat, damien and liverpool

This dumpling stall is one of the favourites of smart and they sell traditional Hokkien Style Dumplings (Changs) with salted eggs as well as Nonya Changs.

For me, any dumplings are now measured against the Gold Standard which is Hoo Kee over at Amoy Street FC, so though they are excellent dumplings, they still lack that X factor of Hoo Kee. However, unlike Hoo Kee which essentially sells one flavour of Bak Chang with optional extras, this one sells more tradtional flavours which include the Nonya variety. Someone actually did recommend the Nonya Chang, but I did not managed try it. 4/5

Conclusion

Certainly a very good traditional Hokkien style Bak Chang. I will need to return to try their Nonya Chang.

They were popular years ago. Still not bad for traditional B.C. Will try the one at Amoy St. FC. if I can go early.

One of the best and consistent bak chang.

For tastewise, although Hoo Kee at Amoy street may have slightly better tasting bak chang on its good days, Hoo Kee do have bad days with the glutinous rice way overcooked which became too mushy.

But so far, Hiong Kee have not disappointed me ever before.

For price versus size and hunger satisfaction wise, Hiong Kee wins hands down.

That should be Eastern Dumplings located along the stretch of shophouses just before the turn into Whampoa.

My mum simply adores the Nonya and Salty Bak Chang.

Called up Hiong Kee yesterday evening to place order but apparently, they do not accept phone orders. Went down ard 7pm & to my contentment, the queue was short but realised that they currently do not have the dumplings. They are taking orders but collection is after 9pm. They are open 24hrs these few days.

Anyway, went shopping in between & came back ard 10pm. The boss grumbled that we are not punctual cos they asked us to come back ard 9pm.

IMO, the dumplings is overly priced- $3.30 for non-salted egg & $3.80 with salted egg. The dumpling was not fantastic, not salty enough to my liking.

Hmmm Anon,

But I think that it should not be their fault that you came back late - the boss has a right to grumble, which hawker stall will open until 10pm to wait for you? Even shopping centres close at 10.

Hmmm maybe price went up due to CNY. Anyway I really like the dumplings, one of the best if not the best in Singapore, the boss frys the rice by hand unlike commercialised shops like eastern.
