Tom's Palette: Not good, VERY good ice cream!

With smart, byron and iwatch_ueat

I seldom rave about dessets. But I am going to rave about the ice cream here because its been awhile since I was bowled over by an ice cream. I always liked small eateries where the people are really passionate about their food. When ice cream is made with such passion the difference is an indelible quality that manifests in tongue tingling delight.

My favourite flavour is the Black Sesame Seed Ice cream. Now, I have been going around looking for the ultimate Black Sesame Paste in Singapore (hot soup version) and have so far been dissappointed. All of them lacked that rich nutty savoury flavour I am looking for. Imagine my delight when I found this taste sensation in an Ice Cream instead! The rich and smooth flavour of the black sesame hits the back of the tongue and lingers for quite awhile after you swallow the ice cream. I was so taken by it that I bought a tub home (first time I bought ice cream for years!). Eunice (the passionate ice cream chef) shared with us that they use a sesame paste rather then powder to make the ice cream and they perfected the receipe only after many trials.

The other flavour that I really enjoyed was the chocolate. No choc chips, Belgian Chocolate or Oreo cookies, simply Chocolate. The Chocolate here is different. It's not overly creamy, but it is a silky smooth and luxurious blend of semi sweet chocolate without the bitterness. Now, we've tasted chocolate from Haagen Daaz, Awfully Chocolate, Ben and Jerry's, Swensen's but I must say that this one has left the most lasting impression for me. Even iwatch_ueat our Godiva Queen, gave it her stamp of approval.

In case you are wondering how to make ice cream at home. Eunice was kind enough to give us a overview of the process. First boil the milk, eggs and sugar to make a custard. Put in the fridge to cool and then add the cream and custard into the Ice Cream churner (shown above) and add your favourite flavours. Sound simple doesn't it? For $2.80 a cup (completely packed not a scoop) I will just sit back and enjoy the fruits of Eunice's labour.

Conclusion

Black Sesame is my absolute favourite. Liverpool swears by the Apple Pie, iwatch_ueat would die for the chocolate, and even smart who needs to cut down on sugar couldn't resist taking more then a few mouthful. Enough said. 4.5/5

I love their ice cream! My 2 favourite combinations are wasabi-lime and mango, and vanilla and summer berries... mmmm

I tried Tom's Palette's Black Sesame before and I must say it was a real pleasure. Better still, I got to enjoy 2 flavors in a small cup which added to my satisfaction. Their Vanilla flavor is worth a try too. I see you like Black Sesame ice cream. The Ice Cream Gallery, Haato and Wild Hibiscus also have their own versions of Black Sesame ice cream that may excite you. Maybe you can give them a try someday.

The Ice Cream Gallery's version is not sweet and you can truly savour the flavor without feeling cloying. Haato (Liang Court Basement and Wheelock Level 2) offers 2 types of sesame ice cream (Black and White). Their version is semi-grainy especially the Black Sesame ice cream. Wild Hibiscus (End of CityLink Mall beside Polar Puffs & Cakes and Raffles Place MRT Unit B1-54)'s version is smooth enough to sooth you completely. Plus, their single scoop serving is big enough to be mistaken for double scoops at the CityLink Mall branch.

I also tried Azabu Sabo's Black Sesame ice cream before. But in my personal view, it can't be compared to the others mainly because their Black Sesame flavor is quite mild for my liking.

Glad you like my recommendation.... =]
So far I have been there 7 times and tried lavender, apple pie, chestnut & brandy, Chrysanthemum, logan and red dates but my favourite is still blueberry cheesecake.... XD
can't wait to see what comments you have for my other recommendations.... XD

I tried this icecream when there was a hot topic over it in the makansutra forum.
Taste wise is was quite good but it started melting too soon!
We left shaw towers after the purchase and by the time we go to the Suntec bridge(2min away), we had to start drinking the melted ice cream.

smart said...

Yes I believe good ice cream melt faster because they dont add chemicals like cmc to prevent the ice cream from melting fast.I cannot take ice cream (doc's order!) but had to tao jiak a little when I was there(how to avoid good ice cream?).

Hi i-eat! i've stumbled onto your blog thru' googling for "tom's palette" and have been hooked ever since. I'm an ardent fan of the ice-cream there! The chocolate ice-cream is so thick and luscious.. the rum and raisin is also a great choice--really can taste the rum! I adore the vanilla ice-cream there because FINALLY someone makes vanilla ice-cream from vanilla beans rather than the cheapo extract! Love that place =) Love your blogs too!

Hey quirkz, i like you leh coz you oso enjoy my fav choc ice-cream. What do you do think? Better than HD?

the chocolate is to die for... =)

I went there to try it out after I saw this post.... I tried the apple pie & cookies & cream. I was quite impressed!

The other ice cream joint I like is the Island Creamery. I find that Tom's ice creams are lighter and smoother, while Island's is creamier (is there such a word?) with more chunky bits (you can see whole Oreos in the C&C).

Looks like its time to try a couple of the others mentioned above....

Hi,

I would like to take a survey with you... how much would you willingly to pay for a pure wine ice cream?

Tom's

Amagada said...

You mean like enough alcohol as if you eating ice cream and drinking wine at the same time? I wouldn't pay too much premium for that as good wine should be enjoyed on its own.

I wouldn't mind a baileys ice cream.

ps: I'm not a crazy wine lover but I enjoy the occassional glass of wine.

Amagada said...

BTW - my favorite is blueburry cheesecake. And I look forward to trying the other flavours recommended by Joyce. :)

Speedy said...

They've come up with some CNY flavours.... Tangerine (Mandarin Orange), Pineapple Tart (PT) & Luo Han Guo (LHG)!

I thought it would be a bit strange to have Luo Hang Guo as ice cream, but it turned out to be really refreshing!

The other 2 flavours tasted good too... but I found the PT tasting a bit too buttery after a while.... I guess diminishing marginal returns kicking in....

Just tried the black sesame and the coffee flavor ones. Both were excellent!

I like the coffee over the black sesame though because it was really aromatic and smooth. The experience was even better than drinking coffee. Smooth and not overly sweet, perfect.

I ordered the large cup and had the ice-cream piled up above the cup, very generous indeed. You're allowed to mix 2 flavors irregardless of whether you order the small or large cup. The lady and the gentleman serving at the counter are jovial and very friendly and gave me a few servings of the other flavors to try.

Excellent ice-cream, service and not forgetting to mention that it is very attractively priced at $2.80 for a small cup which is bigger serving than what most ice-cream shops call "single scoop". What else could I ask for?

Hi Ieat,

It is I Mr. Anonymous-I-eat-Wagyu-And-Spam-Your-Blog-again

I lurrrrrvveee black sesame paste and unfortunately the best I had was some instant hot water sort from Taisun that has sadly been discontinued.

So guess who's going to Tom's Palette tomorrow for black sesame goodness? Me, that's who! Muhahahaha

It is I.

Had the Black Sesame paste Ice cream - good but not really overwhelmingly fantastic. But the vanilla ice-cream was awesome. Can beat Haagen Daz

Hi Tom's

I've noticed that the space vacated by Saigon Deli (470 North Bridge Road #01-05 North Bridge Commercial Complex - next to Liang Seah St) is still vacant....

Don't know if you need that much space, but it will certainly give you enough room to have a sit-down ice cream parlour. There's quite a lot of lunch crowd traffic and it's opposite Bugis! It's also near my office..... ;) Just a bit of vested interest as I can't bear to lose my regular ice cream fix!

ieat said...

At Tom's today. The Black Sesame has been rectified after all that negative feedback. Yes it was good today and I bough half a tub home. The other half was the Hazelnut which hit the spot for me. The Baileys still not enough kick for me.

Impressive! All the samples I've tasted - excellent quality. Unique flavours & new inventions that never fail to tingle the tastebuds.

Immediately bought a tub home with three flavours:

Rum-&-Raisin: More desirable if raisins were soaked longer in rum.

Hazelnut: "Can taste the "Ferrero-Rocher" in it" (according to my bro)

Ed's Tea: MY ULTIMATE FAVOURITE! It's the nicest Teh-C Ice-Cream!!! =D

Luckily I chose Ed's Tea over the Justiamo - not that the latter is lousy, but I agree with Les that it is too subtle for me. MORE BAILEY'S!!!

P.S: Had been given the wrong tub despite checking with the staff. But hey, mistakes are inevitable. Fortunately (or UNfortunately - judging by the excellent reviews on the Chocolate), managed to swop back the correct tub taken by iwatch_ueat.

Tom's Palette is definitely worthy of mention - great innovation; with its unique new flavours, existing classics and its high quality standard. Keep it up! =)

liveyrdream said...

Was at Tom's yesterday for the first time .....

Being a very ice-cream cum dessert person, I'm especially thrilled by all the unique flavours!

I bought a tub home with 3 flavours ($9.90):
1. Black Sesame: Like what ieat said, it is good and I think it is fragant but not over powering.

2. Justiamo ( vanilla with bailey's soaked brownie): Bailey's definitely doesn't seem enough but I love the bits of Bailey's soaked brownies inside... chewy and chocolatey! Yum! Yum! ( But pls add more Bailey and brownies please! :) )

3. Ed's Tea: Not a Teh-C person myself, I prefer Teh-O or English Tea. I don't know what make me buy this... maybe because the name sounds nice and the story behind it? ( Owner Eunice told me that it was named after Ed's Tea because their customer (Ed of cos!) bought the tea for them to make ice cream! So they decided to name the ice cream after him!

Hmmm.... maybe I should start bringing something and pester them to make it into ice-cream! :P

Anonymous said...

Thank you liveyrdream and holydrummer for giving our ice cream a chance and we are glad that you like it... However we are sorry for the mistake we have made. Our staff still feel very bad about it.

Thank you for your feedback on the bailey... we do agree on it... We will be doing some changes and researching on the rum and rasin and the justiamo... we see if we can improve on the flavour... making it stronger.

I would like to thank joyce, Speedy and liverpool1965 for their suggestion on the new location.

Speedy,

I seem to have problem looking for the shop you mentioned, is it beside cheer? i find all the shop there occupied liao?

Joyce,

It seem that you have a very wide contact, i will check with them... but i was worried on the rental... hahaha

Hi Tom's

The shop I was talking about is just a bit further down from Cheers, in the direction of Liang Seah St. It's just behind the bus stop and right next to the kopitiam.

The shop is slightly above street level and may look like it's occupied as some of the furniture and fittings are still inside. But the entrance is shuttered and there was a notice (a while back) stating that Saigon Deli closed down. Didn't go and see if the notice is still there though.

All the best in your search!

The location is directly opposite Bugis right infront of a bustop. Very convenient lor! Lots of lots of poeple and it's a happening place ya! Alongside with OCBC bank.

Hi Tom's

Heard that Shaw Tower will be undergoing 4 months renovation in the food court. is it true? will your business be affect? Is there any compensation? will you be still around or closing down during this renovation period?

concern party

Anonymous said...

hi concern party,

There will be renovation in the food court, and yes it be 4 months.

Tom's

Laplace said...

But the main question is, would Tom's Palette be affected given its close vicinity to said foodcourt?

Speedy said...

Was there today and they mentioned that they will remain open.... but they are expecting a drop in customer traffic. Hopefully it doesn't affect them too badly.

Anonymous said...

Thank you everyone for your concern,

At the moment we have no intention of closing during that period of time. Definity there will be sale drop as well as traffic drop in the area, since the main entrance might have some interruption due to the renovation. Well, in case we are affected by the dust or noise due to the renovation, we might be closing since the food quality will be affected. However, at the same time, we are searching for a bigger area.

You know, you should try their Green Tea ice-cream ! I remembered being one of the priviledged few who asked the "chef" to try and include Green Tea flavour, and then one day, she really took my suggestion and even posted a small comment on her blackboard to make sure I knew that Green Tea ice cream was up !

It was seriously good .... better than Uzumaki at Bugis, if you ask me !

jess said...

finally, my first visit to Tom's sampled 3 flavours - black sesame, chocolate and hazelnut. Black sesame was good for me but can't eat too much at one go for me, so decided for a cup of chocolate and hazelnut....not so nice to sample too many and don't buy.

LOVE the chocolate flavor but not the hazelnut, oil from the nut doesn't taste too good for me.

Went back with intention to buy a tub of chocolate but sampled summer berries, mango, banana chocolate and apple pie...decided to forgo mango and banana chocolate - like the mild banana fragrant but a little too sweet for me. Didn't try the mango but my daughter prefer summer berries.

Didn't try other flavors as too many flavors at one go might not give a fair comment...maybe bring along my distilled water and sip in between...haha!

Lucky enough to try their dou sa bing flavour, unique taste but goes off almost immediately, no aftertaste.

Overall comment:

- warm and sincere service by Eunice and Pamela
- quality ice cream with interesting flavours like holicks
- reasonal price for a 2 flavors at $4/- (btw I saw Pamela trying to 'stuff' as much ice cream she could into the cup, how generous and not just for me but all customers)
- more for takeaways, would be ideal if it allows comfy seats as we sit and savor the ice cream, (never like walking and eating at the same time, how to enjoy the food while you walk? sense of taste is god's gift, like to simply enjoy my food with complete respect and attention)
- hope to see new flavours especially my likes: earl grey, roayl peach, carribean summer, orange pekoe (blending my favourite teas into ice cream, how nice!) and dark chocolate and chesnut.....

Lastly, any interest to have another business partner when you find a new place?

Congrats to the bride-to-be Eunice! (when will be her wedding?)

At the shop, I was immediately brightened up by Eunice's hospitality. I was even allowed to try the new flavour for Aug! It's something very special.
As I leave the shop with a cup of ice cream filled to the brim, I resolve to go back again and again and again...

Today was the 2nd time we've been to Tom's palette, my gf and I. We had such a great experience the first time we were there that one month later, we were practically craving for Vanilla and Chocolate from the parlour just out of the blue! Never have I tasted 2 default ice-cream flavours so deliciously prepared that I actually crave for them. Did manage to try almost everything the shop had to offer the first time we'd visited (thanks for the superb service!) but still couldn't resist going back to basics.

Please open more outlets, preferably somewhere away from the city (hard to find parking!)

We will be doing 2 flavour this month. Curry ice cream and Thai Rhapsody. Yes we do mean curry ice cream.

Curry : It was a flavour suggested by one of the customer which we find it very interesting. Japanese curry is one of the savory sweet ice cream we had....

Thai Rhapsody : Coconut, honey and lemon grass... very asian and quite refreshing...

If anyone of you who wish to try this 2 flavours, Kindy come back tomorrow, as we have almost sold out everything on last Sat.

Les, time to update your pictures & info. They are no longer using Taylor ice cream churner. I've got the new churner brand at hand but it's best you go down and take your own pictures and taste the ice creams churned out by the new machine.

My current favs are coffee (obsession already) & salty caramel cheesecake. Coffee is like double shot espresso. Try it, it's a flavor that is blogworthy. Flavor or the month is Oolong.
