Cendol Geylang Serai: Real Chendol! Geylang Serai Temp Mkt Part 4 of 5

With liverpool and iwatch_ueat

If you have read my previous post, you would get the sense that I am quite out of touch with some Malay/Indian food and will need to rely on our readers to give their opinions on the food. I am just trying to be as honest as I can. When it comes to food that I have not had enough experience in, it would be very foolish if I were to rave about mediocre stuff.

I have not had Cendol for quite a few years already because I always end up opting for something without coconut milk in it. But I have tasted great Cendol when I was younger and I can say that the Gula Melaka and Coconut Milk in this one is quite good. What sets it apart is the use of only homemade Cendol (That is the pale green stuff). Yes, the original Cendol does not have Red Beans, Chin Chow and Agar Agar. It is just the Cendol. I remember eating Cendol in Malaysia and that was it as well. So if you want to try an authentic Cendol, this is certainly a place for it! 4/5

Conclusion

This stall is quite well known and a good place to sample authentic Cendol.

Someone mentioned to me about a indian rojak stall that is supposedly quite good at this market. Unfortunately were not able to give me its name nor stall number. If you do stumble upon it, pls share your review and the details. Thanks

Guess I am used to chendol with the works (red beans, agar agar, atap seed..)a little too plain for my liking

Liverpool must like the chinese version. For me any good food should be simple, chendol with gula malaka will be just refreshing. Like nasi lemak the chinese version have many varieties that defeat what is nasi lemak.

Yup...The original chendol does not have red beans and other ingredients in it. In my 17 years of living here,I have not eaten any good chendol here. My favourite chendol stall is in Malacca......chendol recipe passed down from grandfather to grandson. The chendol at the Geylang Serai looks very much like my fave chendol. Can't wait to check it out!

Is the cheng tng stall run by a Chines couple? If yes, it's quite good but price has gone up since they move to this temp FC.

Agreed that the chendol is a bit bland in the coconut milk and the gula malacca. The kick is not there for a revisit.

Hey I had tried the chendol at sabar menanti but the one at Kandahar St. Are we talking of the place. It was not bad except the coconut milk was a bit diluted.

The pics and description made me think of a stall selling chendol during my much younger days. The old indian man manning that stall also made his own chendol. He sold only 2 things. Chendol and ice bola and the kids in the neighbourhood all loved them. So I was quite in anticipation to get back some childhood experiences.

A friend and I went there after lunch today to have chendol. He took 2 spoonfuls and stopped eating. I managed better, 4 mouthfuls. We found the coconut milk too overpowering, the gula melaka not flavourful enough.

Turn back the clock? Don't even THINK about it.

I was just hoping for too hard to find Chendol with just chendol, coconut milk and gula melaka. Dreaming about childhood days lah.
