Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang; Bukit Tinggi Style Nasi Padang: Geylang Serai Temp Mkt Part 5 of 5

With liverpool and iwatch_ueat

I am no expert in Nasi Padang. For me Nasi Padang is the stuff that Rendesvous Restaurant used to dish out in the good old days. What I really liked about Nasi Padang is the yellow green curry chicken whose name can range from Chicken Korma to Opor Ayam depending on who you talk to. I remembered the curry had this particular taste that was really shiok.

Anyway while walking around the Geylang Serai Temp Mkt, we spied this stall with lots of recommendations stuck on the front, so we decided to try out the food on your behalf. ( : ) Yah like its such a big sacrifice!)

The Chicken Bumbu (Fried chicken with fried grated coconut aka Kerisik) was good but as with all fried chicken it needs to be taken fresh. The piece we got was one of the last pieces so it was a tad dry. The Kerisik was quite good though. 3.5/5

One of the dishes I would order again is the Chicken Rendang. The gravy has got that special oomph about it and went very well with the rice. Liverpool liked it immensely. 4/5

Begedil (mashed potato) is one of my favourite dishes. A good begedil is made from local potatoes which tend to be buttery and slightly sweet. The potatoes should roughly pound so that it is still a little chunky and it should be moist and savoury on the inside. This one fulfills the above criteria and is quite agreeable. 4/5

The stallowner was explaining to me that one of the the differences between Padang food and Malay food is difference in condiments used. This is their version of the Sambal. It is not as well fried as the Malay Sambal so it's tastes a bit lighter.

Conclusion

As I said, I am no Nasi Padang expert. I found the food delicious and nice enough to include in this series of blogs. So can I ask our Nasi Padang experts to write in your comments please!

Not Malay yah? Indonesian!

served great dishes but bid expensive for a hawker stall. I rather go opposite at Joo Chiat Road (near Hotel 81) to have my nasi padang, price about the same but comfortable (aircon) and clean.

That would be Haji Maimunah! Yes, great food there too, but a little different.

oops, so paiseh. Sorry, I only eat and enjoy, quite mindlessly at times. .. no finesse. But I will eat and learn.

Ieat, is it possible to include the individual prices of the items or how much you paid for the meal in total. My pockets are usually reluctant to part with more than 4 to 5 dollars for such a meal.

We paid about $7-$8 dollars for a serving of beef rendang, chicken rendang, 2 bergedils, fish curry, fried chicken and a plate of rice. Sorry, I usually don't keep tab of prices that closely because we pool and pay at the end of the makan session. Will try my best to list the prices next time.

that was cheap, I paid $13 for less items and for two person, so I said expensive.

Theres another famous Nasi Pandang stall, Haji Mona at the same hawker, their food is also as good as Sinar Pagi. I find Haji Mona's beef redang better than Sinar Pagi's

Perhaps you can try the Hjh Maimunah Restaurant at Jalan Pisang, near the Sultan Mosque. It's well known for the Nasi Padang and other malay food..

without a pen name I cannot address, sorry. Yes the branch is at Joo Chiat Road which I mentioned earlier.

Hjh Maimunah Restaurant is at 11 & 15 Jalan Pisang. (Sunday, they are closed)

Their other branch is at 20 Joo Chiat Road #01-02.

I like the one at Jalan Pisang, because the setting is very rustic, very malay, very kampung style, and you can double park without getting fined. (oops!)

Personally, I don't find the food at HJH Maimunah that fantastic. But it's very cheap so good value for money.

The rendang is good, not too oily, compared to the rest of the food. They serve excellent teh and green bean dessert is not bad but too sweet.

I have lived in Singapore for more than a decade and have not found an excellent Padang food here, except the Garuda restaurant.

Sinar Pagi at Geylang is not bad. But, the Padang food in Medan is awesome.

Food at Garuda & Sabar Menanti are on top of my list for nasi padang. The diff are Garuda's taste more polish & elaborate in their use of spices. Sabar Menanti's taste alot simple & basic.
