Toh Kee: Dark Roast Duck: People's Park Food Centre Part 2 of 3

With smart, damien, liverpool and iwatch_ueat

This is another of Singapore's Zhao Pai (Famous) Roast Ducks and the name is almost synoymous with People's Park Centre. With a roast duck so yummy, I wonder why there aren't more people trying to copy their style. Well, maybe the difference is not huge, but the first thing that strikes me is how much darker their Roast Duck is. Yes, it is the Dark Lord of the Roast Ducks. It is almost half black rather then the usual burnt sienna colour.

Underneath that crispy Dark Skin is a very tender and highly agreeable duck meat. Definitely one of the better roast ducks around. 4.5/5 I especially like the braised soy beans that accompany the platter. Not many places provide these nowadays. The next best thing is the Sio Bak, which has very crispy skin and the flesh is tender and fragrant. 4/5 We were not overwhelmed, nay, even whelmed by the Char Siew though. It was tasty, but the meat was a little dry. 3.5/5

Conclusion

Definitely a Roast Duck worth trying. Only complain is they don't have plum sauce to go with it.

Hey, great posting!

Dao Ji does have plum sauce actually, you just need to ask for it :)

PS I've noticed that your Sio Bak reviews haven't had any with good scores. I don't know of any good hawker sio bak (apart from one at circular road but that is pan fried after roasting so it doesn't count), but you could try the sio bak at Imperial Treasure. The one at taka is excellent (apart from being served lukewarm/cold) and relatively cheap.

U could also try the Da Bao and Yam Balls served at Toh Kee's sister stall just beside. Guaranteed a good time.

for reference.

Did you get a chance to compare this with the famous Kay Lee roast duck? Wonder which is better cos I swear by Kay Lee. And their char siew is fabilicious!

Just had roast duck for lunch, my best stall so far - beat Lei Garden, Imperial Teochew and Crystal Jade Palace anytime.

The stall owner is a hongkonger and not too friendly but the food has quality. Served with warm tender meat, delicious taste and crispy skin, really yummy. Don't like the rice though, so usually order half duck plus roast pork.

p.s. I haven't bought roast duck rice $3/ before so not sure those had been sliced and cut piece taste any different. But if you are buying 1/2 or 1 whole duck, and he takes from the freshly roasted batch, ie still hot from oven, it's fabulous.

the wu kor is good!
i really missed its taste eversince i changed jobs and is no longer working in chinatown area.
you can taste the yam and the fillings is very flavourful.
As for the roast duck, i kinda find that the std had dipped eversince the mkt was upgraded.

Went there today thought of ordering a $5 plate of duck meat n char siew but the min charge was $13. Well...ok then. The dish was cold, duck meat was oily and the char siew was tasteless. A complete letdown.
